أَلاAh! مَنwho مُبلِغٌone who conveys سُفيانَSufyan عَنّيfrom me
وَظَنّيand my belief أَنthat سَيُبلِغَهُwill inform him الرَسولُthe messenger
Ah, who will carry a message from me to Sufyan,
Oh that some messenger to Sufyan may tell,
And I think the messenger will convey it to him,
Though I think the messenger himself will tell,
وَمَولاهُand his ally عَطِيَّةَAtiyya أَنَّthat قيلاًa saying
خَلاhas passed مِنّيfrom me وَأَنand that قَدalready باتَhas spent the night قيلُa saying
And to his ally Atiyya—that a saying
And his lord 'Atiyya, that but little
Has gone forth from me, and a saying has lingered overnight?
Comes from me though gossip comes apace.
سَئِمتُمyou grew weary of رَبَّكُمyour lord وَكَفَرتُموهُand you repudiated him
وَذلِكُمُand that (addressing you all) بِأَرضِكُمُin your land جَميلُfine
You grew weary of your lord and repudiated him,
You grew weary of your Lord and so denied Him
And that, in your land, is a fine thing!
Though that in your own land is foul disgrace.
أَلاwill you not تُوفِيkeep faith كَماas أَوفىkept faith شَبيبٌShabib
فَحَلَّso became lawful لَهُfor him الوِلايَةُpatronage وَالشُمولُand wine
Will you not keep faith as Shabib kept faith,
Oh, be as true as the youth Shabib was,
So patronage and wine became his due?
So that guardianship and power on him did devolve.
أَبوهُhis father كانَwas خَيرَكُمُthe best of you وَفاءًin faithfulness
وَخَيرَكُمُand the best of you إِذاwhen حُمِدَwas praised الجَميلُnoble conduct
His father was the best of you in faithfulness,
His father was the truest of you all
And the best of you when noble conduct was praised.
And the best of you when good is told abroad.
أُلامُI am blamed عَلىfor الهِجاءِsatire وَكُلُّand every يَومٍday
تُلاقينيmeets me مِنَfrom among الجيرانِthe neighbors غولُa ghoul
I am blamed for satire, yet every day
Woe for satire! Each day from my neighbors
A ghoul from among the neighbors meets me.
Come raids, while I'm helpless to return a blow.
سَأَجعَلُهاI shall make it لأَجمَعِكُمfor all of you شِعاراًan inner garment
وَقَدand sometimes يَمضيstrikes home اللِسانُthe tongue بِماwith what يَقولُit says
I shall make it an inner garment for you all,
I'll make it a device for all of you
And sometimes the tongue strikes home with what it says.
Though the tongue may speak what the heart disavows.
