If you see, O Umm Farwa, our horses—

Some riderless and led along, others lame—

    فيها نَوافِذُ مِن جِراحٍ تَنبَعُ

    Clashing with enemies has weakened their hides;

They bear wounds that pierce through and gush.

For many a woman says our blows have spared her

The bite of wars, so her household is not alarmed.

No delegation is like those who tied for us

A bond to Muhammad's rope that cannot be severed.

A delegation, with Abu Qatan Huzaba among them,

And Abu al-Ghuyuth, Wasiʿ, and al-Muqniʿ,

And the leader of the hundred with which he supplemented

The nine hundreds, making a full thousand.

Banu Awf and Mukhashin's clan mustered

Six hundred, and four hundred from Khufaf joined the muster.

There, when the Prophet was aided by our thousand,

The Prophet fastened for us a gleaming banner.

We won his banner, and his fastening it bequeathed

Lifelong glory and eminence that cannot be stripped away.

And that morning, beside the Prophet, we were his wing,

On Mecca's broad flats, while the spears swayed.

We answered the summoner of our Lord,

In truth, some of us bareheaded, others helmeted,

In every full-length coat of mail whose linked weave was carefully chosen

By David when he wove iron, and by Tubbaʿ.

And at Hunayn's two wells we had a host

That crushed hypocrisy, and a rocky hill that cannot be uprooted.

The Prophet was aided by us, and we were a people

Who in every calamity could harm and help.

We visited Hawazin that morning with spears,

And a billowing dust-cloud engulfed the horses.

When their fighting strength feared the Prophet, and they massed

A host before which the sun almost bowed in awe.

Banu Jusham were summoned, and in its midst were summoned

The sons of Nasr, with spearheads leveled.

    Until the Messenger Muhammad said:

'O sons of Sulaym, you have fulfilled your duty; raise [your spears]!'

We departed; but for us, their might would have ravaged

The believers, and they would have secured what they had gathered.
