لَوif أَنَّthat أَهلَthe people of الدّارِthe abode لَمdid not يَتَصَدَّعواthey disperse
رَأَيتَyou would have seen خِلالَwithin الدّارِthe abode مَلهىًa place of delight وَمَلعَباand a place for play
If the people of the abode had not dispersed,
If the people of the house had not become divided
you would have seen within the abode a place for delight and play.
You would have seen through the house, amusement and playfulness
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you عَمريby my life هَلquestion particle أُريكَI show you ظَعائِناًhowdah-bearing camels

Indeed, by my life—shall I show you howdah-bearing camels
For have you ever seen, my life, our mischiefs
that travelled along the flank of al-Shatah, then Tay'ab?
That walked the path of wantonness, so they became disgusted
عَلَيهُنَّupon them عَينٌwide-eyed ones مِنfrom among ظِباءِthe gazelles of تَبالَةٍTabalah

Upon them are wide-eyed gazelles of Tabalah,
With eyes of scheming hyenas observing
winsome women who captivate the prudent, seasoned man.
Friends who seduce the forbearing and tested man
إِذاwhen جاءَcame باغيa seeker of الخَيرِkindness قُلنَthey said فُجاءَةًsuddenly

When a seeker of kindness came, they would suddenly say
When the seeker of good comes suddenly they say
to him, with faces like gold dinars, “Welcome,
With faces like gold coins, welcome
وَأَهلاًand welcome فَلاso not مَمنوعُdenied خَيرٍgood طَلَبتَهُyou sought it
وَلاnor أَنتَyou تَخشىyou fear عِندَناamong us أَنthat تُؤَنَّباyou be reproached
and welcome! No good you seek is denied you,
Greetings, no good you sought is forbidden
nor need you fear reproach among us.”
You need not fear any reproach from us
فَلاso do not تَحسَبَنّيyou suppose me كُنتُI was مَولىa client of اِبنِson of مِشكِمٍMishkam

So do not suppose I was a client of Ibn Mishkam,
Do not think I was a client of Ibn Mishkam
Salam, nor a client of Huyayy ibn Akhtab.
Or of Salam or a client of Huwayy son of Akhtab
