فَكَيفَthen how طَلَبناكُمwe pursued you بِكُرزٍin vengeance for Kurz وَمالِكِand Malik
Listen, you two: tell Ibn Jidhl from me:
Deliver from me to the son of Jadhl
Then how did we pursue you in vengeance for Kurz and Malik,
How did we seek you at Kurz and Malik
غَداةَon the morning فَجَعناكُمwe bereaved you بِحِصنِof Hisn وَبِاِبنِهِand of his son
وَبِاِبنِand of the son of المُعلّىal-Mu‘alla عاصِمٍAsim وَالمُعارِكِand al-Mu‘arik
on the morning we bereaved you of Hisn and his son,
The next morning we afflicted you at the fortress and its son
and of Asim, son of al-Mu‘alla, and al-Mu‘arik?
And the son of Al-Mu'alla, 'Asim and fierce battles
ثَمانِيَةًeight مِنهُمof them ثَأَرناهُمُwe slew them in vengeance بِهِfor him
جَميعاًall together وَماand not كانواthey were بَواءًequal requital بِمالِكِfor Malik
Eight of them we slew in vengeance for him,
Eight of them we took revenge on
all together—yet they were no equal requital for Malik.
All together, and they were not protected by Malik
نُذيقُكُمُwe make you taste وَالمَوتُwhile death يَبنيbuilds سُرادِقاًa pavilion
عَلَيكُمover you شَباthe sharpness of حَدِّthe edge of السُيوفِthe swords البَواتِكِthe cleaving ones
We make you taste—while death builds a pavilion
We will let you taste, and death builds a canopy
over you—the keen edges of cleaving swords.
Over you, youths with the sharpness of swords and destruction
تَلوحُthey flash بِأَيديناin our hands كَماjust as لاحَflashed بارِقٌlightning
تَلَألَأَit glittered فيin داجٍdarkness مِنَof اللَيلِthe night حالِكِpitch-black
They flash in our hands as lightning flashed,
Waving in our hands as lightning flashed
glittering in the darkness of pitch-black night.
Glittering in a dark night ready to perish
صَبحناكُمُwe attacked you in the morning العوجَthe lean horses العَناجيجَthe noble steeds بِالضُحىat forenoon
تَمُرُّthey pass بِناwith us مَرَّthe passage of الرِياحِthe winds السَواهِكِthe fiercely sweeping ones
At forenoon we attacked you with lean, noble steeds,
We stormed you suddenly at dawn
racing with us like fiercely sweeping winds.
Passing by you like violent gusts of wind
إِذاwhenever خَرَجَتthey emerged مِنfrom هَبوَةٍa dust cloud بَعدَafter هَبوَةٍa dust cloud

Whenever they emerge from one dust cloud after another,
When it goes out after going out
they surge toward a thorny tangle of death.
Heading towards a death tangled with thorns
