هَجَوتَyou lampooned صَريحَthe pure-born offspring of الكاهِنَينِthe two priests وَفيكُمُand among you
لَهُمtheirs are نِعَمٌfavors كانَتwere مِنَfrom الدَهرِtime تُرتُباenduring
You lampooned the pure-born offspring of the two priests, though among you
You have reviled the priests openly, yet
their favors have endured through the ages.
They enjoyed favors of old standing
أُولَئِكَthose men أَحرىmore deserving لَوif بَكَيتَyou wept عَليهِمُfor them
وَقَومُكَand your people لَوif أَدَّواthey rendered مِنَof الحَقِّwhat is rightfully due موجَباwhat is obligatory
It would be fitter if you wept for those men,
Better you wept for their like; your people,
and if your people rendered what was rightly owed
Had they but done their duty, were absolved.
مِنَof الشُكرِgratitude إِنَّindeed الشُكرَgratitude خَيرٌbetter مَغَبَّةًin outcome
وَأَوفَقُand more fitting فِعلاًas a deed لِلَّذيfor that which كانَwas أَصوَباsounder
in gratitude; gratitude has the better outcome
Gratitude is seemlier than grumbling plaint;
and is a deed more in keeping with the sounder course.
More meet in him who found the right thing apt.
فَكُنتَso you were كَمَنlike one who أَمسىcame to be يُقَطِّعُcuts off رَأسَهُhis own head
لِيَبلُغَto attain عِزّاًhonor كانَwas فيهِwithin it مُرَكَّباlodged
So you were like one who set about cutting off his own head
Thus you are as one who splits his head that he
to attain honor that was lodged within it.
May win regard now crumbled and decayed.
فَبَكِّso weep for بَنيthe sons of هارونَAaron وَاِذكُرand recall فَعالَهُمtheir deeds
وَقَتلَهُمُand their slaying لِلجوعِof hunger إِذwhen كُنتَyou were مُجدِباdrought-stricken
So mourn the sons of Aaron, and recall their deeds,
Weep then for Aaron's seed, recall their deeds,
and their slaying of hunger when you were drought-stricken.
Whom you once starved when harvests went agley.
أَخَوّاتُO Khawwat أَذرِshed الدَمعَtears بِالدَمعِwith tears وَاِبكِهِمand weep for them
وَأَعرِضand turn away عَنِfrom المَكروهِwhat is hateful مِنهُمfrom them وَنَكِّباand turn aside
O Khawwat, shed tears upon tears, and weep for them.
Sisters, bedew the tear with tear and mourn them;
And turn away from what is hateful in them, and keep clear.
From what offends in them turn thou away.
فَإِنَّكَfor indeed you لَوif لاقَيتَهُمyou met them فيin دِيارِهِمtheir homes
لَأُلفيتَyou would surely be found عَمّاfrom what قَدmight تَقولُyou say مُنَكِّباturning aside
For if you met them in their homes,
Did you but meet them in their dwellings, you
you would surely be found turning aside from what you might say.
Would turn from much you say, a visage bent.

Swift toward the heights of honor, noble amid battle,
To lofty things they sped, worthy when turmoil reigned;
the seeker of good is told: “Welcome, most welcome!”
To well-doers of good, hail and welcome.
