Allāh (word begins)
ـهِ(completes Allāh) ماwhat بالُكَails you لاnot تَسلىfind solace
Listen, say to ʿUbayd Allāh:
What ails you, that you find no solace?
أَهذاis this? كُلُّهُall of it فَرطُan excess of
أَسىًgrief مِنكَfrom you عَلىfor هَيلاHaylā
Is all this an excess
of grief on your part for Haylā,
وَقَدand already صارَhe has gone مِنَof النارِthe Fire
إِلىto أَطباقِهاits layers السُفلىthe lowest
though he has gone into the Fire,
to its lowest layers?
تُبَكّيهِyou weep for him وَتَرثيهِand elegize him
بُكاءَthe weeping of الوالِهِthe distraught one الثَكلىthe bereaved mother
You weep for him and elegize him
as a distraught, bereaved mother weeps.
لَقَدindeed أَملىhas granted respite لَكَto you اللَهُGod
فَلاso let not يَغرُركَdeceive you ماwhat أَملىHe granted as respite
God has indeed granted you respite;
so let not His respite deceive you.
وَقَدand indeed أَحسَنَHe did well إِذwhen أَبلاHe favored (word continues)
كَyou فاشكُرso give thanks حَقَّas is due for ماwhat أَبلىHe bestowed
And He did well when He favored
you; give due thanks for what He bestowed.
كَأَنّيas though I بِكَwith you قَدalready خَلَّيـleft (verb begins)
ـتَyou (verb ending) دُنياكَyour earthly life كَماjust as خَلّاhe left
It is as though I see you having left
your earthly life, just as he left his.
فَلاso no آخِرَةًHereafter نِلتَyou attained
وَلَمand did not تَبقَremain لَكَfor you الأولىthe first life
So you have gained no Hereafter,
nor has this first life remained yours.
وَقَدand indeed خُيِّرتَyou were given a choice فَاختَرتَso you chose
صَديقاًa friend مِثلهُone like him يُقلىis loathed
And you were given a choice, so you chose
a friend whose like is loathed,
شَبيهاًsimilar بِكَto you فيin الغَدرِtreachery
وَفيand in كُفرِingratitude for الَّذيwhat تُولىyou are granted
like you in treachery
and in ingratitude for what you are given.
وَقَدand indeed حَدَّثَنيhe told me عَنهُabout him
وَماand not كَذَّبتُهُI disbelieved him يَعلىYaʿlā
And I have been told about him—
by Yaʿlā, whom I did not disbelieve—
وَعَنand about قَنطَرَةِthe bridge of الشَطِّthe riverbank
حَديثاًa tale غَيرَهother than it أَحلىsweeter
and about the riverbank bridge,
another, sweeter tale:
يَقولُhe says العَبدُthe slave فيin الكَندوthe grain bin (word begins)
جِ(completes grain bin) ياO مَولايَmy master ذاthis أَحلىsweeter
The slave says inside the grain bin:
‘O my master, this is sweeter.’
فَماso not أَدريI know وَقَدand already غاباthey both vanished
بِهِinside it أَيُّهُماwhich of the two الأَعلىthe uppermost
So I do not know, since both have vanished
inside it, which of them was on top:
أَكانَwas? العَبدُthe slave مِنfrom فَوقٍabove
أَمِor الفَوقُthe one above هُوَhe المَولىthe master
Was the slave on top,
or was the one on top the master?
لَقَدindeed عَمَّهُماhas engulfed them both اللَعنُthe curse
فَأَولىso woe لَهُماto them both أَولىwoe!
The curse has indeed engulfed them both;
so woe to them both, woe!
