And turned its asker away with a river of help.

7. It came with what souls other than mine incline to,
Though foolish, it leaned toward that.

8. But my soul is a free soul, so it did not care
For baseness or seek paltry contention.

9. I told it that time's affairs
After hardship, ease is appointed.

10. I reasoned with it for a while, but it rejected my reasoning
And I persevered with it until, finding no perseverance,

11. It saw that to attain your love is perfect
For one whose mother bore good fortune and great favor.

12. One who is thirsty, if effort is possible,
Must make effort to attain the sea.

13. If I am long in describing your merit
And expend my life, I cannot thank you enough,

14. And my falling short is excused; I cannot
Count the stars of the horizon or the drops of rain.
