1. I woke up and my vain thoughts left me
By the life of your father they were prolonged companions
١. صَحَوتُ وَزايَلَني باطِلي
لَعَمرُ أَبيكَ زِيالاً طَويلا
2. And I became, seeking no food or meat
My friend, that I would eat
٢. وَأَصبَحتُ لا نَزِقاً بِاللِحاءِ
وَلا لِلُحومِ صَديقي أَكولا
3. Nor a racing horse, impetuous and swift
With slender legs, when I sought amusement
٣. وَلا سابِقي كاشِحٌ نازِحٌ
بِذَحلٍ إِذا ما طَلَبتُ الذُحولا
4. So I prepared to face misfortunes
With a pure reputation and polished rage
٤. فَأَصبَحتُ أَعدَدتُ لِلنائِبا
تِ عِرضاً بَريئاً وَعَضباً صَقيلا
5. And a sharp tongue like the edge of blades
And a long speared lance that flows easily
٥. وَوَقعَ لِسانٍ كَحَدِّ السِنانِ
وَرُمحاً طَويلَ القَناةِ عَسولا
6. And a generous steed from excellent stock
That you hear the sword ringing in it
٦. وَسابِغَةً مِن جِيادِ الدُرو
عِ تَسمَعُ لِلسَيفِ فيها صَليلا
7. Like the water of a pool dragged by the winds
Pulling overflowing floods within it
٧. كَماءِ الغَديرِ زَفَتهُ الدَبورُ
يَجُرُّ المُدَجِّجُ مِنها فُضولا
