1. Between you and me, O unjust in manner!
And the just, generous, fair judge!

2. I feared I would die choking
With sorrow over you while you show no sympathy!

3. I have an inward part that weeps, a sleepless eye,
Limbs that grieve, and an afflicted heart,

4. Lasting sadness, unrelenting regret,
Ever-growing passion, unfading distress.

5. It's as if each part of me has
A heart that yearns and an eye that cannot blink.

6. Shall I complain of you or complain to you? For I waver, hesitating.
I fear you, nay I fear for you. One moment

7. I hope for your pleasure, the next I dread it.
I have squandered my soul in love, so for how long

8. Will it wander heedlessly, leaving the one who loves you to perish?
None will wear away like me, so perhaps you will taste

9. What you make me taste, and then be fair!
Do not deny my sorrow if the spirit

10. Of life abandons me—how could I not grieve?
If the wise Luqman saw what

11. I saw in you, I would see him melt with yearning
For one whose face, were it to appear,

12. Would nearly eclipse the dazzled moon.
Rather, if Jacob saw Muhammad's beauty

13. He would not grieve when Joseph was absent.
A peacock of beauty—no, the most perfect graces,

14. An idol of splendor—no, the greatest, gentlest,
With tender branches, undulating hips,

15. The ground on which he treads grows prideful,
His face imbued with the water of radiance—

16. Upon it the basil of hearts flutters softly—
Unique in his color, as though he were

17. Clear water mingled with sparkling wine.
And as if, strolling, the gleam of his cheek

18. Glides smoothly to the core of all creation.
It does no harm that he is unparalleled,

19. A sword whose eyes are sharpened blades.
His arching eyebrows like a bow drawn back,

20. So woe to him who is targeted!
Poured gracefully in his mold is a pouring

21. In which there is restraint and lightness.
I envy the tear in his palm—does it know

22. In which palm it dwells?
If his teardrop takes wing and flies,

23. Muhammad captivates our hearts.
My Master, if all the world's mouths described you,

24. You would transcend any description.
Graces have multiplied in you, confusing minds,

25. While you are above all artifice.
Ask the rose of his cheek, which beauty planted it?

26. We see it bloom only to swiftly wither.
Had you not redoubled my torment in love

27. The narcissus of your eyes would not weaken me so.
Your glances know my weakness yet your forbearance

28. Is wondrous—the mighty overcome the frail.
Had you no malice, you would not deny

29. What you recognize in love.
So you saw in a dream what you denied awake,

30. As a voice called out to you insistently.
Thus our spirits mingled in oblivion

31. While our bodies did not.
So my spirit came to you then, saying:

32. Between you and me, O unjust in manner!
