1. He whose eye never delighted in seeing,
Why then does he torment it with sleeplessness in passion?

2. A blind man yearns for one he cannot see,
This is truly a sign and lesson.

3. And passion is too great for its sins to be counted,
Yet the passion of the blind is among the greatest sins.

4. Love is blind, and a blind man loves another blind,
So both heart and sight are blind by analogy.

5. If his beloved had a beautiful voice,
Or soft touch, or an aroma’s origin,

6. We’d say he delights in smelling, touching,
Or hearing, since he delights not in seeing.

7. But his beloved in touch is prickly,
In speech noisy, in smell malodorous.

8. If he knew his beloved’s beauty,
We’d say his passion’s ignorant against knowledge.

9. He loves one whose nature he knows not,
Whether ape-like, or moon-like in form.

10. A blind man sings when longing disquiets him,
“My eyes I'll turn, for I cannot see the moon.”
