1. I wish I knew the path of the night travelers,
So I could follow and reach my beloved.

2. What if the slim crescent, shining bright,
Quenched my burning thirst like sweet morning dew?

3. The jealous reproach and the spy pursue me,
While my love remains fixed and true.

4. Has fate made me unfit for love,
Or has old age chained my passions?

5. Let not my fervent youth make you doubt,
Neither my perseverance that has tried me.

6. Know that my bond to you has humbled me,
And that my passion for you brings me low.

7. If I stay, my heart is torn with sadness;
If I go, grief leaves me no peace.

8. Those who blamed our love now pity me,
And the place of our trysts fills me with pain.

9. Your phantom is always there taunting me,
Whether I see it or my eyes play tricks.

10. It seems to offer the union I crave,
While you refuse to end this separation.

11. My Syrian blood fires my agony
And adds to my suffering and torment.

12. With Abdullah fate was kinder before,
Giving freely, not denying or preventing.

13. But then his gifts were replaced
By deprivation, testing my patience.

14. If Aleppo now grieves, it has defeated
Other famed cities in their glory and pride.

15. Yet in its beautiful gardens, flowers bloom
In a rainbow of wondrous colors bright.

16. A rain cloud traveled from the west
To bring water to the east cities parched.

17. If it waters Persia, after the thirst
Of the Harran quarter here is quenched,

18. Or if it reaches Euphrates folk, they will say
Another Euphrates came to help.

19. A King whose rule has eased our life
With justice both gentle and wise.

20. He rules the people with fairness and care,
In public and private likewise.

21. Not like the tyrant who imposes his power
Or the weak man no one relies.

22. Such politics have long been known
To masters from the house of Khaqan.

23. Those who revere God and fear His wrath,
And counsel sincerity to the Sultan,

24. And who build glory never seen before
To boast on the day all stand to be judged.

25. The court and councils are filled with dignitaries
Walking proudly in their stately stride.

26. My soul is ransom for my uncle Muhammad
Whose nobility I extol with pride.

27. A brother who enriched me beyond
What other brothers provide.

28. May God reward you for what
My thanks cannot quantify.

29. I hold your honor beyond any luxury
Or days of joy or times so sublime.

30. Though the road to Jaʿfar is now denied me,
You remain always near.

31. Whenever I count on you to help one in need,
I pledge myself and my guarantee.
