وعالمة وقد جهلت دوائي

1. A sign though she was ignorant of my remedy
Without ignorance, she knew my malady

١. وَعالِمَةٍ وَقَد جَهِلَت دَوائي
بِلا جَهلٍ وَقَد عَلِمَت بِدائي

2. The lovelorn dies for her every day
For missing the trysts and the meeting

٢. يَموتُ بِها المُتَيَّمُ كُلَّ يَومٍ
عَلى فَوتِ المَواعِدِ وَاللِقاءِ

3. She has a mouth, a smile, and saliva
Substituting for smoothed plaster

٣. لَها ثَغرٌ وَمُبتَسِمٌ وَريقٌ
يَنوبُ عَنِ المُعَتَّقَةِ الطِلاءِ

4. An enchanting languorous eye lined with kohl
And a face whose glow cannot be denied

٤. وَطَرفٌ ساحِرٌ غَنِجٌ كَحيلٌ
وَوَجهٌ لَيسَ يُنكَرُ لِلضِياءِ

5. So woe to the gloomy when she appears
Strutting in the finery of grace

٥. فَبوؤسى لِلكَئيبِ بِها إِذا ما
بَدَت تَختالُ في حُسنِ الرُواءِ

6. As if she has a sentinel over my heart
Of refusal to console and aloofness

٦. كَأَنَّ لَها عَلى قَلبي رَقيباً
مِنَ الصَدِّ المُبَرِّحِ وَالجَفاءِ

7. The agonies of passion, they are the ones
Who summoned you to confused babble and song

٧. وَلَوعاتُ الهَوى هُنَّ اللَواتي
دَعَونَكَ لِلبُلابِلِ وَالغِناءِ

8. The apparition that enchanted me revived
The heat of my anguish and the coals of my concerns

٨. وَطَيفٍ طافَ بي سَحَراً فَأَذكى
حَرارَةَ لَوعَتي وَجَوى حَشائي

9. And in the phantom of imagination was the cure of meaning
And the quenching of the thirsty from drought

٩. وَفي طَيفِ الخَيالِ شِفا المُعَنّى
وَرِيُّ الصادِياتِ مِنَ الظَماءِ

10. But I am the most passionate of them
And the most prolific in varieties of affliction

١٠. وَلَكِنّي أَشَدُّهُمُ غَراماً
وَأَكثَرُهُم أَصانيفَ البَلاءِ

11. The censurer says to me, not knowing
That blame is a tenet of treachery

١١. يَقولُ لِيَ العَذولُ وَلَيسَ يَدري
بِأَنَّ اللَومَ مِن شِيَعِ الخَناءِ

12. How often are you deluded by wishes
And dreams cast you into the bare wilderness

١٢. أَجِدَّكَ كَم تُغَرِّرُكَ الأَماني
وَتَطرَحُكَ المَطامِعُ بِالعَراءِ

13. While you shine without resolve
And you alienate without pretext

١٣. وَأَنتَ مُشَرِّقٌ في غَيرِ عَزمٍ
وَأَنتَ مُغَرِّبٌ عَن غَيرِ راءِ

14. I said fate seeks vengeance on me
And the days of tribulations with blood

١٤. فَقُلتُ الدَهرُ يَطلِبُني بِثَأرٍ
وَأَيّامُ الحَوادِثِ بِالدِماءِ

15. The freeman has no place to stay
When the fool rises with the disgraceful

١٥. وَما لِلحُرِّ في بَلَدٍ مُقامٌ
إِذا قامَ الأَديبُ مَعَ العَياءِ

16. Can a wound heal without bandages?
Can a plant grow without water?

١٦. وَهَل جُرحٌ يُرَبُّ بِغَيرِ آسٍ
وَهَل غَرسٌ يَطولُ بِغَيرِ ماءِ

17. I was angry with the palms of four: white, stunted,
Pitch-dark night, and departing companion

١٧. غَريتُ بِأَربَعٍ بيدٍ وَعَنسٍ
وَلَيلٍ دامِسٍ وَرَحيلِ ناءِ

18. And were it not for Ahmed and his helping hands
The afflicted would spend the night roofless

١٨. وَلَولا أَحمَدٌ وَنَدى يَدَيهِ
لَباتَ المُعتَفونَ عَلى الطَواءِ

19. Abu Bakr, how many wounded he consoled
And how widely he treated the eminent with healing

١٩. أَبو بَكرٍ فَكَم آسى جَريحاً
وَكَم عَمَّ الأَعِلّا بِالشِفاءِ

20. A young man whose palm is always Euphrates
Flooding men and women equally

٢٠. فَتىً في كَفِّهِ أَبَداً فُراتٌ
يَفيضُ عَلى الرِجالِ مَعَ النِساءِ

21. A young man whose name is honor and pride
For the lords of pride and nobles

٢١. فَتىً ناديهِ مَكرُمَةٌ وَفَخرٌ
لِأَربابِ المَفاخِرِ وَالعَلاءِ

22. He saw the field of praise as the greatest gain
And the worth of a man is the gain of praise

٢٢. رَأى حَوزَ الثَناءِ أَجَلَّ كَسباً
وَحَسبُ المَرءِ مَكسَبَةُ الثَناءِ

23. He never promised a mendacious vow
Nor said words without loyalty

٢٣. وَلَم يَكُ واعِداً وَعداً كَذوباً
وَلا قُوَلٌ يَقولُ بِلا وَفاءِ

24. He is the affectionate friend to every friend
Lasting in friendship and brotherhood

٢٤. هُوَ الخِلُّ الوَدودُ لِكُلِّ خِلٍّ
يَدومُ عَلى المَوَدَّةِ وَالإِخاءِ

25. He is the sea you have been told about
He is the beneficial rain from the sky

٢٥. هُوَ البَحرُ الَّذي حُدِّثتَ عَنهُ
هُوَ الغَيثُ المُغيثُ مِنَ السَماءِ

26. He has the morals of glorious deeds
And the signs of manliness and generosity

٢٦. لَهُ الأَخلاقُ أَخلاقُ المَعالي
وَآياتُ المُروءَةِ وَالسَخاءِ

27. Abu Bakr you built a lofty structure
Of kindness, not of buildings

٢٧. أَبا بَكرٍ بَنَيتَ بِناءَ طَولٍ
مِنَ الإِحسانِ لَيسَ مِنَ البِناءِ

28. So your stars continue to rise
Despite the envious and hostile

٢٨. فَلا زالَت نُجومُكَ طالِعاتٍ
عَلى رَغمِ الحَواسِدِ وَالعِداءِ

29. Reaching in it the utmost of every state
You estimate attaining in the end

٢٩. فَتَبلُغُ فيهِ أَقصى كُلِّ حالٍ
تُقَدِّرُ نَيلَهُ في الإِنتِهاءِ

30. How many fine ones I suffered before you
Ugly in action when compelled

٣٠. وَكَم عانَيتُ قَبلَكَ مِن جَميلٍ
قَبيحِ الفِعلِ عِندَ الإِجتِداءِ

31. Company whose manners are good but
Whose bounty indicates prosperity

٣١. مَعاشِرُ مالَهُم خُلُقٌ وَلَكِن
لَهُم نِعَمٌ تَدُلُّ عَلى الرَخاءِ

32. Their faces turn black when
I come down on them with praise or prose

٣٢. تَعودُ وُجوهُهُم سوداً إِذا ما
نَزَلتُ بِهِم لِمَدحٍ أَو جَداءِ

33. May you ransom those who do not know
And know how my praise is of my satire

٣٣. فِداؤُكَ مِنهُمُ مَن لَيسَ يَدري
وَيَعلَمُ كَيفَ مَدحي مِن هِجائي

34. So live safely and enjoy tranquilly
With long life in power and survival

٣٤. فَعِش بِسَلامَةٍ وَاِنعَم هَنيئاً
بِطولِ العُمرِ في عِزِّ البَقاءِ

35. And may your years continue to flow over you
With grace that is complete without end

٣٥. وَلا زالَت سِنوكَ عَلَيكَ تَجري
بِإِنعامٍ يَتِمُّ بِلا اِنقِضاءِ

36. My access and greatest scope
To you is by the right of the defamed

٣٦. وَإِنَّ وَسيلَتي وَأَجَلَّ مَتّي
إِلَيكَ بِحَقِّ أَصحابِ الإِساءِ

37. While you are knowing of my ancestry and grandfather
Jurist of the land in a throng of scholars

٣٧. وَأَنتَ فَعارِفٌ سَلَفي وَجَدّي
فَقيهُ الأَرضِ في حَشدِ المُلاءِ

38. And my uncles were counted long ago
Among the elite, the high and mighty

٣٨. وَأَعمامي فَقَد عُدُوا قَديماً
مِنَ العُظَماءِ أَهلِ الإِعتِلاءِ

Your generosity is wholly good, but

٣٩. وُجودُكَ كُلُّهُ حَسَنُ وَلَكِن
أَجَلُّ الجودِ حُسنُ الإِبتِداءِ
