1. Tell the oriole, when the spirit comes, do not
Greet Abu Malbos,
١. قُل لِلأُرُندِ إِذا أَتى الروحينَ لا
تَقرا السَلامَ عَلى أَبي مَلبوسِ
2. A house in which generosity was unknown and
Goodness unrecognized between deacons and priests.
٢. دارٌ بِها جُهِلَ السَماحُ وَأُنكِرَ ال
مَعروفُ بَينَ شَمامِسٍ وَقُسوسِ
3. They never heard of hospitality, no guest entered
Their abode except for Iblees.
٣. لَم يَسمَعوا بِالمَكرُماتِ وَلَم يُنِخ
في دارِهِم ضَيفٌ سِوى إِبليسِ
4. Their ears shut to the caller to passion,
Hearkening only to the church bell.
٤. آذانُهُم وَقرٌ عَنِ الداعي إِلى ال
هَيجاءِ مُصغِيَةٌ إِلى الناقوسِ
5. Their enemy remains luxuriating in their wealth
And their friend reveling in kisses.
٥. ما إِن يَزالُ عَدُوُّهُم في نِعمَةٍ
مِن مالِهِم وَصَديقُهُم في بوسِ
6. Their swords are wood and the oaths of their women
Are either lies, by the priest's banner.
٦. أَسيافُهُم خَشَبٌ وَحِلفُ نِسائِهِم
إِمّا صَدَقنَ بِفَيشَةِ القِسّيسِ
7. When their roots are examined, they trace
Back to mirage-begot foundlings.
٧. وَإِذا فَلَيتَ أُصولَهُم رَجَعوا إِلى
نَسَبٍ كَرَيعانِ السَرابِ لَبيسِ
8. Alas, blame the clan of vine planters! They
Have vanished with bribes and evil selves.
٨. إيهاً مَلامَ بَني عُصَيرٍ إِنَّهُم
ذَهَبوا بِلُؤمِ مَناصِبٍ وَنُفوسِ
9. On their faces, the garb of monkeys,
And on their heads, horns of cuckolds.
٩. فَعَلى وُجوهِهِم لِباسُ خَزايَةٍ
وَعَلى رُؤوسِهِمِ قُرونُ تُيوسِ
10. Do not call on Abu al-Walid who has the character
Of a donkey and the nature of an ox.
١٠. لا تَدعُوَنَّ أَبا الوَليدِ لِنائِلِ
خُلُقَ الحِمارِ وَخِلقَةَ الجاموسِ
