2. And smooth, delicate gazelles distinguished from plain ones
By their elegance despite their plainness

3. How did you come when the sands around you are desolate
With no oasis, and life is not eternal?

4. The cloak of darkness in its black dye
And dawn behind the curtains

5. A bouquet rested a tired one, and attracted
A tired one with its fluttering intoxication

6. Stop at an encampment time has pardoned
And a summer erased by the passing of summer

7. Restrain this group from moving on though you blame it
For its excessive hesitation

8. Little care lovers give to long blame
And rebuke

9. A friend I do not fear time as long
As I see him, though time brings many changes

10. An ambition carried me through
Every rough pass in fearful lands

11. A friend is no use to one who gains
No livelihood or food

12. True brothers are created by
Generosity unless marred by meanness

13. I am content and confident in my noble father
For an act built on munificence

14. A link between us of refined manners
The strongest of links, nothing weak

15. My ally against time is generosity
From a noble one, ally to the noble

16. He extended his shade over me and settled me
In his familiar land

17. With ample gifts and promises
Not hoped for vainly or delayed

18. And a refuge for visitors, his face
Like the full moon, ever replenished

19. Tender to those who come to him
With a parent’s kindness and compassion

20. He rises to the heights by a soul
Aloof from this lowly world

21. He overcomes calamities, exalted and difficult
By his subtle, hidden wisdom

22. Deliberate with heavy forbearance
And judgment weighing as light as perception

23. Like a palm tree, he almost sways
With his slender, delicate form

24. As if the pendant and the gazelle
Took their elegance from his elegant swaying

25. The leader whose attack breaks the battle lines
With wave after wave of ranks

26. He crosses the frayed shreds and fills
The swords with his dense, Thursday thrust

27. Where the coward cannot find his escape
And souls are the butt of the blades

28. In a fold of death tearing apart
At dawn all its folds

29. A position amid the swords, narrow
And shreds of armor arranged

30. He stretched the night over the assailants so they
Could not walk but by the light of swords

31. Oh Abu Fadl, perfection of merit
Is unmatched except by your famed merit

32. Majesty of the open-handed, the virtuous and the humane
Is in your high, noble majesty

33. Kisrawi lords from early days
Pale faces, slender noses

34. You excelled in your youth, and maturity
Is only for the unripe and crude

35. When the miser among the people denies it
You are known for your benevolence
