1. I said to the one blaming love: Awaken!
Do not belittle the taste of what you never tasted.
١. قُلتُ لِلّائِمِ في الحُبِّ أَفِق
لا تُهَوِّن طَعمَ شَيءٍ لَم تَذُق
2. The soul yearns for the falsities of fancies,
And the soul's comfort is in the sleeplessness of the vigilant.
٢. تَبهَشُ النَفسُ إِلى زَورِ الكَرى
وَمَتاعُ النَفسِ في زَورِ الأَرَق
3. The elite of time - when time is pure -
Bring together that which was separated when unity was lost.
٣. صَفوَةُ الدَهرِ إِذا الدَهرُ صَفا
تَجمَعُ الشَملَ إِذا الشَملُ اِفتَرَق
4. The passionate lover fulfilled his promise
On the night of the tryst - was it a specter that knocked?
٤. أَغَريمُ الصَبِّ أَدّى دَينَهُ
لَيلَةَ الوَعدِ أَمِ الطَيفُ طَرَق
5. The meeting is not pleasurable unless
The instigator of passion makes the embrace delightful.
٥. لا يُلَذُّ المُلتَقى إِن لَم يَكُن
باعِثُ الشَوقِ لَذيذَ المُعتَنَق
6. If her allusion attained the eloquence of intimacy
And the excess of the unleashed one.
٦. لَو أَنالَت كانَ في تَنويلِها
بُلغَةُ الثاوي وَزادُ المُنطَلِق
7. The All-Powerful deemed it sufficient
That every heart be enthralled by her love.
٧. نَظَرَت قادِرَةٌ أَن يَنكَفي
كُلُّ قَلبٍ مِن هَواها بِعَلَق
8. A hero deemed unwise he who did not say:
Death always lurks near.
٨. قالَ بُطلاً وَأَفالَ الرَأيَ مَن
لَم يَقُل إِنَّ المَنايا في الحَدَق
9. If you want to blame one who passed away
Then blame the one who fell in love.
٩. إِن تَكُن مُحتَسِباً مَن قَد ثَوى
لِحِمامٍ فَاِحتَسِب مَن قَد عَشِق
10. The slanderer fills my soul with anxiety
And fabricated talk pains me.
١٠. يَملَأُ الواشي جَناني ذُعراً
وَيَعنيني الحَديثُ المُختَلَق
11. Whether it is love for her or separation from her,
The reality of humiliation is love or separation.
١١. حُبَّها أَو أَو فَرقاً مِن هَجرِها
وَصَريحُ الذُلِّ حُبٌّ أَو فَرَق
12. I leave off blaming the companion -
That is not termed disloyalty so one should not be ungrateful.
١٢. أَدَعُ الصاحِبَ لا أَعذُلُهُ
لا يُسَمَّى بِعُقوقِ فَيَعُقُ
13. And I see studied reserve suits the gentleman more
Than wealth which, when kindled, he said was set ablaze.
١٣. وَأَرى الإِملاقَ أَحجى بِالفَتى
مِن ثَراءٍ يَطَّبيهِ قالَ اِحتَرَق
14. There is nothing in it but what entices him,
So if I said be inspired, he said it caught fire.
١٤. لَيسَ فيهِ غَيرُ ما يُغري بِهِ
فَإِذا قُلتُ اِنشَوى قالَ اِحتَرَق
15. Abundant compassion is hoped to benefit
After sincere advice is freely given.
١٥. أَكثَرُ الإِشفاقِ يُرجى نَفعُهُ
بَعدَ أَن تَطرِحَ الخِلَّ الشَفَق
16. The simpleton stumbled so he did not acquire
Any acceptance or subtlety that he spent.
١٦. هُبِلَ الجَحشُ فَما أَوتَحَ ما
يَقتَنيهِ مِن قُبولٍ أَو لَبَق
17. And any brotherhood from him, if put up for sale
In the market for thirty days would not sell.
١٧. وَإِخاءٍ مِنهُ لَو يُعرَضُ لِل
بَيعِ في سوقِ الثَلاثا ما نَفَق
18. It is as if the separator came with all the ugliness
In a wager or race.
١٨. وَكَأَنَّ الفَصلَ يَأتي ما أَتى
مِن قَبيحٍ في رِهانٍ أَو سَبَق
19. Claiming sodomy while wagering
When the gentleman is more rightly guided than one with a shaved head.
١٩. يَدَّعي أَنَّ لُواطاً راهِناً
وَالفَتى أَحلَقُ مِن ذاتِ الحَلَق
20. He has layers over layers of shortcomings
A cloak he wears over another cloak.
٢٠. مِن زِياداتِ النَقيصاتِ لَهُ
طَبَقٌ يَركَبُهُ بَعدَ طَبَق
21. If his face was ugly, that sufficed us - but
He increased with a curse, the ugliness of his character.
٢١. كانَ قُبحُ الوَجهِ يُجزينا فَقَد
زادَنا مَلعوناً قُبحَ الخُلُق
22. A scholar of calumny, if he sincerely said to us
A word of sincerity, we would not think him truthful.
٢٢. عَلَمٌ في الإِفكِ لَو قالَ لَنا
كِلمَةَ الإِخلاصِ ما خِلنا صَدَق
23. Rough in his sins, but his pedigree dilutes it,
Which is bandied about to the base.
٢٣. غِلَظٌ في جِرمِهِ يَشفَعُهُ
حَسَبٌ أُهزِلَ بِاللُؤمِ فَدَق
24. An immoral wretch whose birds are all
Pastured in the theatre of blame and vain talk.
٢٤. فَرخُ مَجهولاتِ طَيرٍ كُلُّها
قَد رَعى في مَسرَحِ الذَمِّ وَزَق
25. A genealogy, in a cage or its taverns,
Borrowing a mantle from every rag.
٢٥. نَسَبٌ في القُفصِ أَو حاناتِها
مُستَعيرٌ رُقعَةً مِن كُلِّ زِق
26. And if its branches violate the origin,
It is despicable, nothing like it matches.
٢٦. وَإِذا خالَفَ أَصلاً فَرعُهُ
كانَ شَنّاً لَم يُوافِقهُ طَبَق
27. Debased on earth, no trait raises it up
Crumpled within or softened.
٢٧. سائِخٌ في الأَرضِ لا تَرفَعُهُ
خَصلَةٌ يَخثُرُ فيها أَو يَرِق
28. He acts with good deeds then his benefit passes
So it ends just as compassion passed.
٢٨. مُدبِرُ الخَيراتِ وَلّى نَفعُهُ
فَتَقَضّى مِثلَ ماوَلّى الشَفَق
29. His palms are destroyed without achieving
The intention to demolish gates so they swing open.
٢٩. هُندِمَت كَفّاهُ مِن دونِ الَّذي
يُبتَغى هَندَمَةَ البابِ اِنصَفَق
30. If we sought any trials from his saliva,
It would be found deeper than the well of depths.
٣٠. لَو طَلَبنا بَلَّةً مِن ريقِهِ
وُجِدَت أَعمَقَ مِن بِئرِ العُمَق
31. We did not find any shortcoming to praise in him
Other than the gifts of pathways.
٣١. لَم نُصادِف خَلَّةً نَحمَدُها
عُندَهُ غَيرَ هِداياتِ الطُرُق
32. Do not be surprised to see his seal ring
While the simpleton, by God, trusts in it.
٣٢. لا تَعَجَّب أَن تَرى خاتَمَهُ
وَعَلَيهِ الجَحشُ بِاللَهِ يَثِق
33. If we whistled he would grunt in the water, and if
He passed by an ass he would bray.
٣٣. لَو صَفَرنا عَبَّ في الماءِ وَلَو
مَرَّ مُجتازاً عَلى الأُتنِ نَهَق
34. If he walked wobbling or yelled to
A friend or died - he passed away.
٣٤. إِن مَشى هَملَجَ أَو صاحَ إِلى
صاحِبٍ عَشَّرَ أَو ماتَ نَفَق
35. A prisoner bound in chains, an ignoble
Forehead emerged, along with a head and neck.
٣٥. موثَقُ الأَسرِ ضَليعٌ أَشرَفَت
جَبهَةٌ مِنهُ وَرَأسٌ وَعُنُق
36. Neither is the job of the camel-driver recorded, nor
Is wonder emaciated, nor is the face created.
٣٦. لا وَظيفُ العَيرِ مَرقومٌ وَلا ال
عَجَبُ مَهضومٌ وَلا الوَجهُ خَلِق
37. A sound one whose broker did not stand
And took refuge in a nest or theft.
٣٧. وَصَحيحٌ لَم يَقُم نَخّاسُهُ
وَتَبَرّا مِن عَشاً أَو مِن سَرَق
38. Blue-eyed, and of his talents
Is that he appears blue-eyed to the red-eyed.
٣٨. أَزرَقُ العَينِ وَمِن إِبداعِهِ
أَن يُرى في أَعيُنِ الحُمرِ زَرَق
39. He equips the wall or employs it
While intending to buy from a land he did not irrigate.
٣٩. تُسرِجُ الحائِطَ أَو توكِفُهُ
وَنيَةٌ مِن بَلدَةٍ ما لَم يُسَق
40. And if he boldly commits an outrage
He takes the lifted or walks with his head held high.
٤٠. وَإِذا أَسرى فاحِشَةً
أَخَذَ المَرفوعَ أَو سارَ العَنَق
41. Do not seek what is past of his virtues
The pawn is hopeless so leave it, as it is locked up.
٤١. لا تَتَّبِع فائِتاً مِن خَيرِهِ
آيَسَ الرَهنُ فَدَعهُ إِذ غَلِق
42. Consider him as a hireling, so his term ended,
Or a slave, so he fled.
٤٢. عُدُّهُ كانَ أَجيراً فَاِنقَضى
شَهرُهُ أَو كانَ عَبداً فَأَبَق
43. If we calculated what is for him and against him
We would disbelieve that we were deprived of provision.
٤٣. لَو حَسَبنا ما عَلَيهِ وَلَهُ
لَكَفَرنا أَن حُرِمنا وَرُزِق
44. The world misses the measures, so whoever is not
At the bottom of the pit is in the air.
٤٤. تُخطِئُ الدُنيا المَقاديرَ فَفي ال
جَوِّ مَن لَم يَكُ في قَعرُ النَفَق
45. He would revive a dead man from thirst
But the excess he brought on killed the drowned.
٤٥. كانَ يُحيِ مَيِّتاً مِن ظَمَإٍ
فَضلُ ما أَوبَقَ مَيتاً مِن غَرَق
46. Woe to me! If only poverty or wealth
Could be made continuous with a purse or stupidity.
٤٦. فَلَجي لَو أَنَّ فَقراً أَو غِنىً
يُستَدامانِ بِكيسٍ أَو حُمُق
47. They floated around with those frolicking,
Like foam upon the sea crashing into each other.
٤٧. بَزَّت بِالمُخلَدِيِّنَ لُهىً
كَجِمامِ البَحرِ باتَت تَصطَفِق
48. If we were given our due in the ascents
We would have risen in sublimity on the horizon.
٤٨. لَو نُوَفّي ما لَنا في صاعِدٍ
لَصَعَدنا مِن عُلُوٍّ في الأُفُق
49. His worth is higher than his fortune
Fate does not favor you if your right is not seized.
٤٩. قَدرُهُ مُرتَفِعٌ عَن حَظِّهِ
لا يَرُعكَ الحَظُّ لَم يُؤخَذ بِحَق
50. One who attains his goal precedes the appointment
Or surpasses it, had he surpassed the sword he would have won.
٥٠. يُعجِلُ المَوعِدَ أَو يَسبِقُهُ
نائِلٌ لَو سابَقَ السَيفَ سَبَق
51. The dew shook his bending branches
Clothed in the foliage of praise, scintillating.
٥١. هَزَّ عِطفَيهِ النَدى مُكتَسِياً
وَرَقَ الحَمدِ أَثيثاً يَأتَلِق
52. I do not approve a shaking from a bough
Unless it is from one with tender green leaves.
٥٢. لَستُ أَرضى هِزَّةً يَأتي بِها
غُصُنٌ إِن لَم يَكُن غَضَّ الوَرَق
53. A determined one who in his management
Gathers the dispersed kingdom when it fractures.
٥٣. حازِمٌ يَجمَعُ في تَدبيرِهِ
بَدَدَ المُلكِ إِذا طارَ شِقَق
54. Kings in the world - in might -
Whose armies are distanced from it and markets.
٥٤. لِمُلوكٍ في الذُرى مِن مَذحِجٍ
وَقَعَت مُبعِدَةً عَنها السُوَق
55. The greatest honor enriches the lands of their guests
And the Nile in flood enriching the meadows.
٥٥. أَغزَرَ العِزُّ قِرى أَضيافِهِم
وَفِياقُ النَيلِ يُغزِرنَ الفِيَق
56. Each one of them is valued as a collective
Group, while the eye is the price of paper.
٥٦. يُحسَبُ الواحِدُ مِنهُم فِأَةً
جَمَّةً وَالعَينُ أَثمانُ الوَرِق
57. He adheres to the most daunting path
In the highest matters and most difficult deeds.
٥٧. يَتبَعُ النَهجَ الأَشَطَّ المُنتَوى
في مَعالي الأَمرِ وَالفِعلِ الأَشَق
58. He takes over - without the battle-standard wavering -
The clash of banners in combat, fluttering.
٥٨. يَتَوَلّى دونَ خَفّاقِ الحَشا
صَدمَةَ الراياتِ زوراً تَختَفِق
59. He does not love holes except in war
Since sacrificing life for death is a breach.
٥٩. لا يُحِبُّ الخُرق إِلّا في الوَغى
إِنَّ بَذلَ النَفسِ لِلمَوتِ خُرُق
60. He employs the Indian on the red-dyed camel
And the Khath'i on the one with the yellow saddlecloth.
٦٠. يُعمِلُ الهِندِيَّ مُحمَرَّ الظُبا
فيهِ وَالخَطِّيَّ مُصفَرَّ الخِرَق
61. He confined the enemies in his power
A victory as if he contended with a star and reached it!
٦١. حَصَرَ الأَعداءَ في قُدرَتِهِ
ظَفَرٌ لَو زاوَلَ النَجمَ لَحِق
62. Some slaves are freed by his favors
While lovely maidens by him are abducted.
٦٢. أَعَبدٌ تُعتَقُ في إِنعامِهِ
مِنهُمُ الدَهرَ وَحورٌّ يُستَرَق
63. In forgiveness, his wrath is hoped to subside,
But rancor does not flare up in him.
٦٣. يُرتَجى لِلصَفحِ مَوتوراً وَلا
يَهَبُ السُؤدُدَ فيهِ لِلحَنَق
64. One who pursues every narrowness with relief,
Withholding the self from each weary breath.
٦٤. مُتبِعٌ كُلَّ مَضيقٍ فَرجَةً
مُمسِكٌ مِن كُلِّ نَفسٍ بِرَمَق
