1. O Prince of the Faithful, you are our only hope
We put our hopes in you, for despair has gone on too long
١. أَميرَ المُؤمِنينَ أَما غِياثٌ
نُؤَمِّلُهُ فَقَد طالَ القُنوطُ
2. Our rulers want only corruption
With privileges for each of their cronies
٢. أَبى عُمّالُنا إِلّا فُسوقاً
لِكُلٍّ مِن أَحِبَّتِهِم شُروطُ
3. Some governors disgrace their people by immoral acts
While others practice sodomy
٣. فَمِن والٍ يُلاطُ بِهِ فَتَخزى
رَعِيَّتُهُ وَمِن والٍ يَلوطُ
4. We found an Arab of ancient times
Who in the end was overtaken by fate
٤. وَجَدنا نَهشَلاً عَرَبِيَّ دَهرٍ
تَعَرَّبُ في عَواقِبِهِ النَبيطُ
5. A brother of Dubar who dies in it
With no shroud prepared nor perfumes
٥. أَخو دُبُرٍ يَموتُ الأَيرُ فيهِ
فَلا كَفَنٌ يُعَدُّ وَلا حَنوطُ
6. And a heretic who can barely walk
Yet the officers fawn over him
٦. وَزِنديقٌ يَكادُ الجِذعُ يَمشي
إِلَيهِ وَيَستَخِفُّ لَهُ الشَريطُ
7. His hands are tight-fisted with good deeds
Yet his domains span the wide oceans
٧. تَضيقُ يَداهُ بِالمَعروفِ قَبضاً
وَناحِيَةُ اِستِهِ البَحرُ المُحيطُ
8. His beard has grayed from stupidity and old age
Marked by disgrace and downfall
٨. يُجَزِّرُ لِحيَةً حَمُقَت وَشيبَت
بِشَيبَتِها الدَناءَةُ وَالسُقوطُ
9. By God, his poetry exposes
The vileness of his governance for all to see
٩. وَمِن أَشعارِهِ وَاللَهُ يُخزي
رُعونَتُهُ أَلا بانَ الخَليطُ
10. His emirates rule over us
With the unjust authority of an oppressor
١٠. غَدَت إِمراتُهُ وَلَها عَلَينا
وِلايَةُ جائِرٍ فيها قُسوطُ
11. In heat, lusting after studs
Mounted daily by the grooms
١١. تَحيضُ عَلى البِغالِ فَكُلُّ يَومٍ
عَلى جَنَباتِ لَبَّتِها عَبيطُ
12. The breeders excite them
As the burning brands light up their desire
١٢. يَقومُ لَها السِماطُ وَقَد أَضاءَت
عَلى لَبّاتِها أَبَداً سُموطُ
13. They have taken over our affairs, words and deeds
Saying and doing as they please while the oppressed are mute
١٣. تَوَلَّت أَمرَنا قَولاً وَفِعلاً
تَقولُ وَيَسكُتُ العَيرُ الضَروطُ
14. So woe to the parched wilderness and its makers
When their ruinous schemes are laid bare
١٤. فَيا ذُلَّ البَريدِ وَمُبرِديهِ
إِذا فَضَّت خَرائِطُهُ الخَروطُ
