أفي مستهلات الدموع السوافح

1. In the outpouring of copious tears,
When a lover complains of torment by the beloved,

١. أَفي مُستَهِلّاتِ الدُموعِ السَوافِحِ
إِذا جُدنَ بُرءٌ مِن جَوىً في الجَوىًنِحِ

2. Indeed, a yearning for the lost one remains,
Bringing chronic sickness to sincere hearts.

٢. لَعَمرِيَ قَد بَقّى وَصَيفٌ بِهُلكِهِ
عَقابيلَ سَقمٍ لِلقُلوبِ الصَحائِحِ

3. Sorrow departs, bringing tears flowing from eyes,
To a permanent abode in the earth, not leaving.

٣. أَسىً مُبرِحٌ بَزَّ العُيونَ دُموعَها
لِمَثوى مُقيمٍ في الثَرى غَيرُ بارِحِ

4. So what determination and resolve they possessed,
Were hidden by the shroud beneath the soil.

٤. فَيالَكَ مِن حَزمٍ وَعَزمٍ طَواهُما
جَديدُ الرَدى تَحتَ الثَرى وَالصَفائِحِ

The descent of the revered elder pained you,

٥. أَساءَكَ مِن شَيخِ المَوالي نُزولَهُ
بِمَنزِلِ داني مَوضِعِ الدارِ نازِحِ

6. To the abode of one brought low, home abandoned.
If his mourner exaggerates, you’d think

٦. إِذا جَدَّ ناعيهِ تَوَهَّمتَ أَنَّهُ
يُكَرِّرُ مِن أَخبارِهِ قَولَ مازِحِ

7. He repeats the words of a jesting companion.
I feared not that his place would be envied

٧. وَما كُنتُ أَخشى أَن يُرامَ مَكانُهُ
بِشَيءٍ سِوى لَحظِ العُيونِ الطَوامِحِ

8. Except by glances of ambitious eyes.
Had he feared the darkness, he’d have taken refuge

٨. وَلَو أَنَّهُ خافَ الظُلامَةَ لَاِعتَزى
إِلى عُصَبٍ غُلبِ الرِقابِ جَحاجِحِ

9. In a company who subdue unruly necks.

٩. فَيا لَضَلالِ الرَأيِ كَيفَ أَرادَهُ
أَحِبّاؤُهُ بِالمُعضِلاتِ الجَوائِحِ

10. Oh how astray the opinion that wished him
Ill through perplexing calamities!

١٠. تَغَيَّبَ أَهلُ النَصرِ عَنهُ وَأُحضِرَت
سَفاهَةُ مَضعوفٍ وَتَكثيرُ كاشِحِ

11. His victorious people deserted him and
The foolishness of the weak was multiplied.

١١. فَأَلّا نَهاهُم عَن تَوَرُّدِ نَفسِهِ
تَقَلُّبُ غادٍ في رِضاهُم وَرائِحِ

Why did he not forbid their insistent spirits

١٢. وَأَلّا أَعَدّوا بَأسَهُ وَانتِقامَهُ
لِكَبشِ العَدُوِّ المُستَميتِ المُناطِحِ

13. Flitting capriciously to please them?
Why did they not prepare his might and vengeance

١٣. قَتيلٌ يَعُمُّ المُسلِمينَ مُصابُهُ
وَإِن خَصَّ مِن قُربٍ قُرَيشَ الأَباطِحِ

14. Against the enemy goat obstinately butting?

١٤. تَوَلّى بِعَزمٍ لِلخِلافَةِ ناصِرِ
كَلوءٍ وَصَدرٍ لِلخَليفَةِ ناصِحِ

15. A slain man whose loss afflicts all Muslims
Though he was closest to Quraysh clans.

١٥. وَكانَ لِتَقويمِ الأُمورِ إِذا التَوَت
عَلَيهِ وَتَدبيرِ الحُروبِ اللَواقِحِ

16.
He assumed the caliphate with determination to aid it

١٦. إِذا ما جَرَوا في حَلبَةِ الرَأيِ بَرَّزَت
تَجاريبُ مَعروفٍ لَهُ السَبقُ قارِحِ

17. As a devoted guardian and sincere counselor.

١٧. سَقى عَهدَهُ في كُلِّ مُمساً وَمُصبَحٍ
دَراكُ الغُيومِ الغادِياتِ الرَوائِحِ

18. He had the capability to set matters right
And strategize for battles when they raged.

١٨. تَعَزَّ أَميرَ المُؤمِنينَ فَإِنَّها
مُلِمّاتُ أَحداثِ الزَمانِ الفَوادِحِ

19.
When they contended in the field of opinion,

١٩. لَئِن عَلِقَت مَولاكَ صُبحاً فَبَعدَما
أَقامَت عَلى الأَقوامِ حَسرى النَوائِحِ

20. The experiences of the known pioneer showed strong.

٢٠. مَضى غَيرَ مَذمومٍ فَأَصبَحَ ذِكرُهُ
حُلِيَّ القَوافي بَينَ راثٍ وَمادِحِ

21. His era quenched both dawning and sunset
With clouds roaming and drifting away.

٢١. فَلَم أَرَ مَفقوداً لَهُ مِثلُ رُزئِهِ
وَلا خَلَفاً مِن مِثلِهِ مِثلَ صالِحِ

22. Console the Commander of the Faithful, for
These are the calamities of fickle time.

٢٢. وَقورٌ تُعانيهِ الأُمورُ فَتَنجَلي
غَيايَتُها عَن وازِنِ الحِلمِ راجِحِ

Though fate suspended your master one morning,

٢٣. رَمَيتَ بِهِ أُفقَ الشَآمَ وَإِنَّما
رَمَيتَ بِنَجمٍ في الدُجَنَّةِ لائِحِ

24. It later lamented over peoples with wailing.

٢٤. إِذا اختَلَفَت سُبلُ الرِجالِ وَجَدتَهُ
مُقيماً عَلى نَهجٍ مِنَ القَولِ واضِحِ

25. He left without blame, his name now
The adornment of verse between elegist and praiser.

٢٥. سَيُرضيكَ هَدياً في الأُمورِ وَسيرَةً
وَيَكفيكَ شَغبَ الأَبلَخِ المُتَجانِحِ
