لو أسعدت سعدى بتنويلها

1. Had good fortune granted its gift through obtaining it,
Or made easy the giving of that which is at hand,

١. لَو أَسعَدَت سُعدى بِتَنويلِها
أَو يَسَّرَث عاجِلَ مَبذولِها

2. It would have healed the entrails of the anguished,
Whose soul is sick with yearning.

٢. لَأَبرَأَت أَحشاءَ ذي لَوعَةٍ
مَتَيَّمِ الأَحشاءِ مَتبولِها

3. The coquetries, when affections had fallen,
Brought us fictions from their saying,

٣. إِنَّ الغَواني يَومَ سِقطِ اللِوى
أَدَّت إِلَينا الإِفكَ مِن قيلِها

4. How many a gloomy night whose morn
Lengthened while we were deceived.

٤. كَم لَيلَةٍ مُستَبطَإٍ صُبحُها
يَصدُدنَ أَو يَزدَدنَ في طولِها

5. Thirsty intimates whose stinginess,
Moistened yet dumb, their trinkets jingling.

٥. أَوانِسٌ عَطشانَةٌ وُشحُها
رَيّانَةٌ خُرسٌ خَلاخيلُها

6. Lightening the darkness of night when they gathered,
The gleam of their polished ornaments.

٦. عَوارِضٌ يُجلى ظَلامُ الدُجى
إِذا اِجتَلَينا ضَوءَ مَصقولِها

7. From cheeks well fed, dyed with color,
In their kissing was success and caressing.

٧. وَمِن خُدودٍ مُشبَعٍ صِبغُها
في لَثمِها الفَوزُ وَتَقبيلِها

8. What's your eye's excuse having wandered
From the bend of the delicate waist?

٨. ما عُذرُ عَينَيكَ وَقَد زاغَتا
عَن مُرهَفِ القامَةِ مَجدولِها

9. As for imaginations, they did not cease
Flowing to us with their vanities,

٩. أَمّا الخَيالاتُ فَلَم تَنفَكِك
تَسري إِلَينا بِأَباطيلِها

10. And we gained nothing from them
But wishes and their misleading.

١٠. وَلَم نَعُد مِنها إِلى طائِلٍ
غَيرِ الأَمانِيِّ وَتَضليلَها

11. Don't weary yourself with the world, for however
Superior its excellent is tailed by its inferior.

١١. لا تَعبَ بِالدُنيا فَكائِن أَرَت
فاضِلَها تابِعَ مَفضولَها

12. Rarely knowing, its expression hasn't been
Like its realization made evident.

١٢. وَقَلَّما عارِفَةٌ لَم يَكُن
مَقولُها بادِيَ مَفعولِها

13. The tribe of bounty wearied, in their thronging
For their lofty deeds and ability.

١٣. وَكدُ بَني الفَيّاضِ في حَشدِهِم
عَلى مَعاليهِم وَتَأثيلِها

14. They made their actions pass amongst them
Transporting them in every transfer.

١٤. قَد سَيَّروا أَفعالَهُم بَينَها
وَنَقَّلوها كُلَّ تَنقيلِها

15. They folded away from its expanse their shrouds,
A mile's length of earth and its extent,

١٥. يَطوونَ مِن أَبعادِها طَيَّهُم
مِن فَرسَخِ الأَرضِ وَمِن ميلِها

16. If they appeared in the thickets of the spear-woods
You'd think the lions of the jungle in its lair.

١٦. إِذا بَدَوا في حَرَجاتِ القَنا
حَسِبتَ أُسدَ الغابِ في غيلِها

17. A group of them continues to rise wearing
Scabbards white like the sharpest blades.

١٧. مازالَ رَهطٌ مِنهُمُ يَعتَلي
بِمُغمَدِ البيضِ وَمَسلولِها

18. Swords that make renowned hands recoil
When they cleave skulls and unsheathe.

١٨. صَوارِمٌ عَن حَدِّ مَأثورِها
خَلَّت إِيادٌ دَيرَ عاقولَها

19. Thank Ali, apart from men, for
The strangest of gifts and their granting.

١٩. شُكري عَلِيّاً دونَ قَومٍ عَلى
غَرائِبِ النُعمى وَتَخويلِها

20. And we hope from his overflowing hands
What Egypt hopes from its Nile's flooding.

٢٠. وَنَرتَجي مِن سَيبِ آلائِهِ
ما تَرتَجيهِ مِصرُ مِن نَيلِها

21. I regard none as wont but
The hand of the son of bounty and its action.

٢١. وَلَستُ أَعتَدُّ عَتاداً سِوى
يَدِ اِبنِ فَيّاضٍ وَتَأميلِها

22. If delay lessened an act of grace
Swiftness multiplied its rewards.

٢٢. إِن قَلَّلَ المَعروفَ تَأخيرُهُ
كَثَّرَ جَدواهُ بِتَعجيلِها
