1. Your soul's nearness to us is like a yearning
While the near one denied to you is distant

2. And her father, though severe and changed
In his love for her, is made new again

3. Neither has distance fulfilled nearness
Nor was a meeting's decree bars unbreached

4. Her way is ever to find a pact diminished
And a loss - the loss of what will not increase

5. When told openly of my plaint,
It seems slight to the sane that I persist

6. Does youth return or in life's cycle
Revolve with no recurrence, as 'tis missed?

7. I see not life and parting as equals
Living and parting are darkness and light

8. And I count the wretch exceedingly blessed
Given spoils until he's called prospered

9. Whom eyes have turned from and glanced away
To others, while cheeks blush rosy red

10. With singing girls, love endures
For he who in his song endures

11. Ahmad ibn Abd al-Aziz was sought
By a caravan - to him pilgrims trod

12. If distance comes between, it draws her near
Or a messenger unto him plods

13. A lynchpin of Rabia ibn Nizar
Where dwellings rise high and numbers bloom

14. Who grasped the lands' breadth, the East
Subsumed, his banners knit and loomed

15. A resolve amazed in Bushanj's spear points
Its path straightens, drawn taut

16. The foreigner prays for Karman's shade
When a generous man is praised and lauded

17. He calmed the deviant strife, till
Those who sat in it the standing excused

18. A defender, his sword guards the realm
Behind it, driving threats away

19. The House of the False Messiah, like yesterday, does not
Rise, though each extinguished fire concludes

20. Kept from those calamities are they
Whose weakness saw them, and losers bore witness

21. Their throng was ruptured on a day when one perished
Among them, he who lasts does not perish

22. Their columns did not rise one eve when
Mountains approached them, in which iron shone

23. It blew apart the sands' encampment, thereafter no
Pillar in those tents stood up

24. And the rogues, offspring of Musa ibn Mahran
Look upon death's scene dispirited

25. They rose with iron - either swords
Pierced them, or they wore shackles

26. The deferred oversees the remnants among them
As the over-hasty harvested are reaped

27. In olden times he determined by al-Abbas's counsel
A decisive purpose and sound view

28. Standing at the apex of glory,
He seeks to add to it increase

29. Traits, all of them a burden occupying
Their bearers with fatigue and sorrow

30. If tasked with immortality, surely
For some, eternity would prove a burden

31. Most divided are the paths of these
Blamed and praised people

32. All horsemen of Persian or Arab stock
Are in veils and thick robes wrapped

33. Without it, stream beds were but fields
And without its outpouring hands, generosity

34. Oh Abu Yusuf, the likes of you
From attaining lofty aims are hindered

35. If we saw the Jews yield a precious thing
We would wonder that they vilified you

36. When you adorned your young slaves
You displayed in them what you desired

37. An approach amid calamity you exhibited
Where the noble may lead, then follow

38. A setback that emboldened you - we consider it
A blessing that the envious outlasts

39. Tell us, while the stars are confounded
Why has fortune abandoned your happiness?

40. The brightest stars halted to turn back
So the hidden one drew aside his veil

41. Whenever you recited your verse, it did not lack
Casting your parents as the lauded

42. When rhymes are arranged, prose tumbles out
From its abodes along with poetry

43. He sought forgotten mention and named himself
Al-Baridi when al-Barid passed

44. God ignited in Abu al-Fat'h's tomb a pyre, if fulfilled, to
Return, once concluded

45. I did not praise the miser, nor accept
The attainment of a praised one who is ascetic
