1. Does my greeting reach her at nightfall,
And is she told of my love and passion?

2. Does she know that I am her patient,
She, my cure for the sickness of longing and pain?

3. Swaying as she walks, slender as a branch,
Bending gracefully, shapely and slim.

4. She denied me, though I'm not guilty,
And refused my words, though no sin did I commit.

5. Whatever life remains in me is yours,
Though only skin and bones and a breath it be.

6. Yearning, with tears flowing down my cheeks,
Pouring like melted lead, beyond stem or dam.

7. That which you made lawful was never forbidden,
And that which you made forbidden, never halal.

8. I disobey those who blame you,
And rebel against those who criticize and condemn.

9. When I speak of being content,
I take off my clothes, or rip them in frenzy.

10. I humble myself before every fool,
And stand tall before every villain.

11. What is life but a draft of generous wine,
With tears mixing into the cup like rain?

12. The music of the reed flute stirs up our longing,
Accompanied by the wailing melodies of the lute.

13. This day our pleasure is but to hear singing,
Sweet music, and keep company with wine.

14. We sing in a castle, strolling its corners,
Some of us sitting, and some of us standing.

15. White pigeons flutter around us,
Darting through the sky like arrows.

16. The partridges glide down the hillside,
Their claws tinted red as if with henna.

17. Never did I see, like my beloved, the rain waters
Gushing through the valley with such grace and vigor,

18. Nor a mountain, like my love, standing firm at times,
Then tamed, led gently by the reins.

19. God combined all beauty in this fair-faced one,
A brilliant moon from the family of the Prophet.

20. Gentle with us, not frowning or withholding generosity,
Nor being stingy in his overflowing favors.

21. The people love him for protecting
And defending the land’s borders from all sides.

22. For he has tenderness and mercy towards them,
And his hands pour forth goodness bountifully.

23. When Ja’far’s sword failed to defend the faith,
The keen blade of al-Husayn became its protector.

24. With it he mends the fearful breach,
Should the enemy dare to dream of violating its sanctity.

25. We pray, confident that you are, in God’s eyes,
The best of all Imams to lead us aright.

26. Our hearts incline to you, O Trustee of God,
With sincere passion and steadfast devotion.

27. I swear by Him I worship as my Lord,
By my prayers, devotions, and fast sincerely kept -

28. You have best protected God’s religion,
And staunchly stood for the way of the Lord.
