1. My sorrows and worries have doubled,
For I have lost my friends and brothers.
١. ضاعَفَ مِن بَثّي وَأَحزاني
فَقدُ أَخِلّايَ وَإِخواني
2. He who has angered me - if he were just,
Would appease me.
٢. إِنَّ الَّذي أَسخَطَني لَو رَمى
فِيَّ إِلى العَدلِ لَأَرضاني
3. The nights in their cycles,
Rule over the quarrel of two companions.
٣. وَلِلَّيالي في تَصاريفِها
حُكمانِ فيما رابَنا اثنانِ
4. In the tribulations of fate, if examined,
Are two tastes - of sweetness and bitterness.
٤. وَفي خُطوبِ الدَهرِ إِن فُتِّشَت
طَعمانِ مِن شُهدٍ وَخُطبانِ
5. The habit of days in their deeds
Mix good and evil.
٥. وَعادَةُ الأَيّامِ في فِعلِها
تَخلِطُ مِن سوءِ وَإِحسانِ
6. Those heights rely steadfastly
On Ayyub son of Suleiman.
٦. تِلكَ العُلا يُعوِلنَ وَجداً عَلى
أَيّوبِهِنَّ بنِ سُلَيمانِ
7. Upon a man who was not accustomed in his pursuits
To weakness of effort or retreat.
٧. عَلى امرِئٍ لَم يُلفَ في سُؤدُدٍ
بِواهِنِ السَعيِ وَلا وانِ
8. Generosity has passed and what remains
Is neither first to be hoped for nor last.
٨. ثاوٍ مَضى وَالجودُ تِلوٌ لَهُ
لا أَوَّلٌ يُرجى وَلا ثانِ
9. Patience, oh Abu Al-Abbas, patience
In an intricate, serious matter.
٩. صَبراً أَبا العَبّاسِ صَبراً عَلى
رَزيأَةٍ مُعضِلَةِ الشانِ
10. An affliction whose consequences
Flow between the eternal and the ephemeral.
١٠. وَنَكبَةٌ تُجرى عَقابيلُها
مَضامِعَ الباقي عَلى الفاني
