1. I see no trace left on the mirage's surface which responds,
The gentle breeze and soft winds have calmed.

2. Ruin succeeded the sturdy encampments in their melodies,
Just as old age succeeds youth.

3. Life turned bleak after they left, though in them
One would pledge while still soft and pliant.

4. Overcome by sorrow burning my insides,
And comfort tossed about, aggrieved.

5. I was startled by what startles about the onset of greying hair,
And troubled by what is troubling.

6. Black hair, when it turns white,
Severs the connection of the lover to the loved.

7. After the blackness passed what used to be sweet to me
Of our life, and pure.

8. Those are the names, when bidding farewell intensified,
Grief was brought between them.

9. She glanced furtively, like the gazelle glances,
And leaned as the slender branch leans.

10. And to Ahmed we sent the submissive,
Seekers unsatisfied.

11. Wings in the dark emboldened, and those weakened,
Whose habit is persistence.

12. Well-mannered, whom propriety has not
Cracked in his most dignified conduct.

13. When he sought drink, rain poured down,
An example of his generosity being struck.

14. And when good fortune brought to them
One missing his mark, or one hitting it.

15. The helpless man excused himself there,
And the noble man carried on unfazed.

16. And I see the people when they left his territory
And their sprawling came to an end.

17. A front runner slowed down until
The desired wind calmed its ferocity.

18. We did not encounter from rights that
Whose pains the hearts complain,

19. Each day a right arises causing
Anguish or severs a once close tie.

20. Receiving it has perils of affairs,
And from over escorting also misfortunes.

21. The caravan was watered, heading to Palestine,
So among them someone dear approached us.

22. His company is witnessed when he is witnessed among us,
And joy departs when he departs.

23. A praiseworthy trait of yours, O Abu Al-Abbas, may your
Tribulations be relieved by Ayyub.

24. So compose what the doves have trilled, and what
Has provoked yearning for a strange place.
