4. The Dar turned between As-Sareema and Al-Hima
The only purpose of passion is the whispering of the wind

5. I tortured myself with love for one
Who had no union nor affection for me

6. A beloved whom the stars took away
And which beloved comes without distance?

7. When you pass through the desert of Ghuwair wandering
And the plains of As-Sawajir pass you, O Saad

8. Say to the clan of Adh-Dhahhak, wait, I am
The serpents are cordiality and the wolves are roses

9. Clan of Wasil, wait, for the son of your sister’s daughter
Has resolves, jesting with his opinions is serious

10. When you antagonize him, do not provoke other than ruin
Though it is a breach, no knot can be tied for him

11. Fearsome as the edge of a sword, if tossed at
The lairs of cowards, their flags and pillars would collapse

12. Some men wish that I were one of those
Whom the days of death took, neither ascending nor descending

13. Were it not for my enduring the burden of every calamity
The hostility of enemies would not have wished what they wished

14. Leave me and them be, my firmness is enough for me
When war is not ignited, no flint is needed to extinguish it

15. I have a companion whose anger is that of an unsheathed sword
Long spear, no limit can subjugate him

16. And a weeping woman complaining of separation with tears
Rushing forth like scattered pearls

17. May your integrity not grieve you among the clan of ambition
Yearning for the sublime, none can rival him

18. Whoever is free, is for resolve, night journeys
And the actions of night and raids a slave

19. A night as if morning is in its latter part
The glimmer of a blade whose sheath enclosed it

20. I clothed it as the wolf and fangs of a prowling lion
By the eye of the son of night, no pact with destruction

21. I stirred the muddy battleground over its corpses
And foxes and lynxes befriended me therein

22. And the fill of an eye bearing its falsehood
Its ribs on both sides roasted by flames

23. It has a tail like a quiver trailing it
And a curved, crooked spine

24. Leanness emaciated it until its bitterness endured
Nothing left but bone, soul, and skin

25. It crunches a bare bone in its lair of destruction
Like the crunch of ice struck by cold

26. I have such severe hunger with no means of life
In a desert where no livelihood was sensed

27. We two there, a wolf talking to itself
And seriousness makes seriousness woeful

28. It howled, so I howled a retort provoking it
Then it came like lightning followed by thunder

29. So I hit it with futility it thought its feathers
Were upon a star dismantling as the night darkens

30. But it only increased in audacity and intensity
And I knew the matter with it was serious

31. Then I followed with another, misleading the edge of its blade
To where ruin, terror, and hatred would be

32. It fell as I had made it drink the cup of destruction
Thirsty as if it were sweet wine

33. I stood and pelted it with pebbles, roasted it
The flames beneath it blazing

34. I got a despicable morsel from it then left it
Turning from it as it growled, rejected

35. The nights have indeed ruled us unjustly
The judgments of the daughters of time have no aim

36. Is it justice that the noble suffers its tyranny?
And its best is taken by the vulgar, vile weakling?

37. Leave me be about divining the hidden-
My resolve cannot be swayed by fortune or fate

38. I will carry myself in every calamity
As the quality of a sword polished by India

39. So those who fear the path out of fear of ruin will know
That the decree of God cannot be rejected

40. If you live praised, the like of me sought money
To earn wealth or have praise sung for him

41. And if I die without success, no person
Seeking tomorrow is tasked except to strive and endeavor
