1. My poetry has spread through every land
And everyone craves its softness

2. I composed excellent poetry about love
All other poetry paled in comparison

3. The people of Farghana sang it
And the villages of Sus, Altā and Snad

4. And the villages of Tangier and the dam
To which my poetry flowed at sunset

5. ‘Athama claimed I did not find
In her love, but mine was more intense

6. If only he who blamed a lover
Was tied in society with plaited palm fiber

7. The tresses of ‘Athāma dangle
On a cheek like a towering dune

8. O you who asked about our joy
The joy of life is chatter and children

9. And fine singing from a lyre
Fragrant breezes and sought rest

10. That is better than my riding a mule
Every time it veered from my saddle, I said stop

11. Or riding a wavy horse
Every time it galloped with me, I said more

12. Riding the ram gives pleasure
And healing for a young man from what he finds
