1. If your heart is softened by my suffering,
From excessive torment and excessive longing,
١. إِن رَقَّ لي قَلبُكِ مِمّا أُلاقي
مِن فَرطِ تَعذيبٍ وَفَرطِ اِشتِياق
2. And you find pleasure in union with a lover,
Then provide me with some of yourself before we part.
٢. وَجُدتِ بِالوَصلِ عَلى مُغرَمٍ
فَزَوِّديني مِنكِ قَبلَ اِنطِلاق
3. If you bid farewell with a kiss,
It will be a generous hand for separation.
٣. إِن أَنتِ وَدَّعتِ بِتَقبيلَةٍ
كانَت يَداً مَشكورَةً لِلفِراق
4. I caution against separation for the sake of intimacy,
And I yearn for it for the sake of embrace.
٤. أُحاذِرُ البَينَ مِنَ أَجلِ النَوى
طَوراً وَأَهواهُ مِنَ أَجلِ العِناق
5. God has made Ja'far
The guardian of religion and suppressor of hypocrisy.
٥. قَد جَعَلَ اللَهُ إِلى جَعفَرٍ
حِياطَةَ الدينِ وَقَمعَ النِفاق
6. Obedience to him is an obligation, and disobedience
Is among the greatest disbelief and highest conflict.
٦. طاعَتُهُ فَرضٌ وَعِصيانُهُ
مِن أَعظَمِ الكُفرِ وَأَعلى الشِقاق
7. One whose advice does not flow sincerely from his heart,
Has no integrity in his religion.
٧. مَن لَم يَبُحكَ النُصحَ مِن قَلبِهِ
فَما لَهُ في دينِهِ مِن خَلاق
8. So submit to us and our glory will submit to you,
And live on, for goodness is everlasting.
٨. فَاِسلَم لَنا يَسلَم لَنا عِزُّنا
وَابقَ فَإِنَّ الخَيرَ ما عِشتَ باق
9. Indeed Damascus has become a paradise,
Green of meadow, fragrant of basil.
٩. إِنَّ دِمَشقاً أَصبَحَت جَنَّةً
مُخضَرَّةَ الرَوضِ عَذاةَ البِراق
10. Its air is light and dewy,
Its water smooth flowing and sweet tasting.
١٠. هَواؤُها الفَضفاضُ غَضُّ النَدى
وَماؤُها السَلسالُ عَذبُ المَذاق
11. Time is auspicious among its loyal ones,
And living there has delicate edges.
١١. وَالدَهرُ طَلقٌ بَينَ أَفيائِها
وَالعَيشُ فيها ذو حَواشٍ رِقاق
12. Yearning toward you,
For nearness to you and soon union.
١٢. ناظِرَةٌ نَحوَكَ مُشتاقَةٌ
مِنكَ إِلى القُربِ وَوَشكِ التَلاق
13. And how could it not be preferred with passion
When its summer equals an Iraqi winter?
١٣. وَكَيفَ لا تُؤثِرُها بِالهَوى
وَصَيفُها مِثلُ شِتاءِ العِراق
