1. I abandoned intoxication, how it destroys me,
And a friend deserves to abandon it.

2. When I said his pouch advanced him,
He missed the deficiency that delayed him.

3. He called us to an obscene gathering,
Ugly for the pure of heart to attend.

4. So wine came bitter for him,
Hard on a barren liver.

5. When its blackness is poured in cups,
The cup of the companion is dyed by it.

6. You left sun-ripened raisins
And made us drink the dregs of molasses.

7. Why did I obey you in drinking it
As if I hadn't been warned of it or seen it?

8. Why did I greedily desire the like of it
When I didn't know myself to be greedy?

9. What afflicts me doesn't afflict you
By the truth of the robes of monks.

10. So I decided firmly on leaving
Since the time demanded we be wary.

11. We rose hastily while the stars
Were setting, leaning to their setting.

12. The bridge was out of service
And we almost spent the night at the dam.

13. When I returned, hangovers
Had reached their peak, keeping awake.

14. So do not ask me about a condition
I suffered, difficult and strange.

15. It was an awful night forced upon me
Like the night you spent in Al-Qawṣarah.
