1. With greetings of peace I visited a leafy grove,
And a glance that made my heart flutter with joy.

2. She came in haste and was adorned,
Her brief visit made sorrow shine beautifully.

3. The perfume followed her,
And the tinkle of her jewelry kept pace.

4. I cannot forget our night in the thorns,
When youth coiled the staff tightly.

5. A silence that inflames love,
And a lament that stirs tears and weeping.

6. As the wind flirted in its course,
At times gently, at times stormily.

7. Your harshness has pained my liver with wounds,
That are continuously renewed.

8. I overlooked the sin of old age near you,
As if I had invented old age itself.

9. He who sees the honor of forty
Deceives grey hair with false youth.

10. We tested the taxes of the one whose
Deliverance we did not foresee as near.

11. He whose principles events
Revealed as resolute, decisive and steadfast.

12. Fickleness plays in my nature,
Generosity hoped for, and awe-inspiring power.

13. Like a sword if you cry out to it,
And like the sea if you come to it conciliated.

14. A young man whom God honored in manners
And clothed in praised austerity.

15. And gave him a share of every merit,
And a portion of all glory.

16. Who will protect you from any misfortune
Or impending calamity that may befall?

17. If your opinion turned against me,
You met me later with happy tidings.

18. And thwarted my hopes pulling me to you,
Though they do not deserve to be thwarted.

19. I am made uneasy by what you bring,
And magnify your worth, though I am apprehensive.

20. And I hate to persist
On the path of delusion only to face hardships.

21. I deny my suspicion that you became angry,
When I never knew my hunch to be false.

22. If you were not angry I would not
Endure time and complain of adversities.

23. Blame is inevitable, whether I fault
Or praise you.

24. Does my pasture in your dwelling
Become paved roads and my watering place a barren valley?

25. Do I sell loved ones like chattel
And grieve for a dear beloved?

26. Every day we have a stance
Where parting rends our robes.

27. Your anger was nothing but parting
That poured out tears and bruised hearts.

28. Had I known a sin I would not
Be troubled with doubt over repentance.

29. I will be patient until I encounter
Your approval, sooner or later.

30. I will watch your opinion until it is sound,
And await your kindness until it returns.
