Reproach me not if patience brings me solace,

لا تلحني إن عزني الصبر

1. Reproach me not if patience brings me solace,
For the face of my beloved is excuse enough.

١. لا تَلحَني إِن عَزَّني الصَبرُ
فَوَجهُ مَن أَهواهُ لي عُذرُ

2. A songstress with whom love brought me no joy;
Her sorcery slays between her lids.

٢. غانِيَةٌ لَم أَغنَ عَن حُبِّها
يَقتُلُ في أَجفانِها السِحرُ

3. If she glanced my way, submissiveness I claimed;
If thoughts of her stirred, her arrogance I proclaimed.

٣. إِن نَظَرَت قُلتُ بِها ذِلَّةٌ
أَو خَطَرَت قُلتُ بِها كِبرُ

4. Her anklet she raises, that it might free her,
A rider whom her hips do inhibit.

٤. يَخِفُّ أَعلاها فَتَعتاقُهُ
رادِفَةٌ يَعيا بِها الخَصرُ

5. I've lost hope of union, my solace is but
Estrangement, which forever shall persist.

٥. أَصبَحتُ لا أَطمَعُ في وَصلِها
حَسبِيَ أَن يَبقى لِيَ الهَجرُ

6. At times life grants what we hope to achieve,
And sometimes what we ne'er hoped to receive.

٦. وَرُبَّما جادَ بِما يُرتَجى
وَبَعضِ ما لا يُرتَجى الدَهرُ

7. No noble deed in this world remains
Save Abu Is’haq and his rain.

٧. لَم يَبقَ مَعروفٌ يَعُمُّ الوَرى
إِلّا أَبو إِسحاقَ وَالقَطرُ

8. A white knight of the tribe of Mus'ab
Whose feats all other feats surpass.

٨. أَبيَضُ يَنمي مِن بَني مُصعَبٍ
إِلى الَّتي ما فَوقَها فَخرُ

9. None raced mankind to generosity
But he went furthest, his name extolled.

٩. ما اِستَبَقَ الناسُ إِلى سُؤدَدٍ
إِلّا تَناهى وَلَهُ الذِكرُ

10. No man we ever praised for a trait
But in him tenfold that trait was found.

١٠. وَلا حَمَدنا في اِمرِئٍ خَلَّةً
إِلّا وَفيهِ مِثلُها عَشرُ

11. I know not which of his lands
Is sweetest, if one lists them in verse.

١١. وَلَستُ أَدري أَيُّ أَقطارِهِ
أَحسَنُ إِن عَدَّدَها الشِعرُ

12. Is it his radiant face, his steadfast grace,
Or the flood of gifts that he disbursed?

١٢. أَوَجهُهُ الواضِحُ أَم حِلمُهُ ال
راجِحُ أَم نائِلُهُ الغَمرُ

13. The judiciary was blessed, when he
Oversaw them, commanding and curbing.

١٣. زينَت بِهِ الشُرطَةُ لَمَّ غَدا
إِلَيهِ مِنها النَهيُ وَالأَمرُ

14. In his hand the spear is like
A star in the night sky, ringed by the moon.

١٤. كَأَنَّما الحَربَةُ في كَفِّهِ
نَجمُ دُجاً شَيَّعَهُ البَدرُ
