1. We forever suffer the pangs of love
And how much anguish brings you near

2. Never before Arwa did my tears flow
For the slightest trace that appeared or dwelled stronger

3. I swore to her I was fine except what
A sick heart clung to ardently yearning

4. And I complained much of her love yet
The wont of enduring love is plentiful complaining

5. I was, and Arwa, reveling in the prime of youth
Intoxicated with the rapture of youth or ardently desiring

6. She claimed one of repute does not indulge in frivolity
Yet frivolity may be present where purpose is present

7. Though the wanton chided my composure
I remained nonchalant, sought by them yet aloof

8. Ask about the steeds of youth and their loss
Did the swift camels race them or the excellent surpass?

9. As if the nights were tempted by their events
With love of one I refused and desire of another I craved

10. Who knows the days sees not their abasement
As bliss, nor counts their turns as affliction

11. When spread before their guide they bend
Hastening behind folded and stowed

12. The misfortunes guided us though none
Would guide unless one who misleads induced

13. When we warded off disasters with the noble
We busied them with the gentle combat

14. With the bloom of verse the tidings of a beloved
Whose virtues persist being told and narrated

15. The noble deeds you direct never cease
You see the envious emaciated, by them provoked

16. Casting propriety suddenly without care
Among them one complacent, though he deliberate

17. With an ambition higher than stars in stance
A stance for it beyond all places or haven

18. The horizons opened before a reforming sword
With unchecked swaying assaults

19. Covering the enemies beyond their plots
With resolve, accomplishing what was determined

20. He surpassed in strategy then inclined towards them
And overwhelmed adversities, none ignited

21. When we recall him we are detained and do not stop
To his peer among men, or compare

22. Indeed, Abu Issa has outstanding subtle proofs
Of merit, not pretentiously claimed

23. We incline between Saad and the full moon
When inclined to kindness, which of the two glowed?

24. The days' turns are not prosperity and adversity
More injurious among the people than him

25. We were quenched by his outpourings, and he was
Like rain, wherever his draft flowed, nourishing

26. Thus some land met its share of his heavens
While other land evaded drinking or awaited harm

27. No valley of kindness from you has not been
Our winding path upon the farthest bend

28. When we refrain in the least from it we are
Deficient, yet abstaining from it brings acceptance

29. I find you, as time is, predator upon
The weakest, undistinguished, the strong overpowering

30. When misfortunes promise to bring us down
Meet that promise, so it may be bent

31. If fortunes are folded from us, the like of them
When the action of fate declines the like folds

32. When I say the vessels of life approach their end
The transience of what time leaves and takes appears

33. Costs wherein youth is shackled in succession
And the noblest temperaments destroyed in multiples

34. A man of wisdom remains suspended in them
Upon jeopardy in sale, nearing his desire

35. When a debt from a creditor comes due
Favors cower or composure smolders

36. Having tasted the flavor of obligation unsavory
He finds neither pleasure in the favor nor solace

37. I grieve for the frowning of beauty nearing
The dread of parting, changing or withering

38. I said, as the exclusive intimacies between us
Were determined to be wished for others or dissolved

39. Perhaps Abu Issa will loose with his stature
Necks of loved ones that buckled twisting

40. No transgression to pursue ones hopes
And seek bounty from the Giver of bounty

41. Dirhams rewarded for rhymes as if
Distinguishing them by shares, justice was equated

42. Whether we travel, ease our journey
Or stay, halting travel and dwelling

43. And it suffices of the dirhams' merit that they
When placed in provisions, come second to piety
