1. The soul yearns for the names, if only you could attain them
Through them you would find it, from absence and its passion

2. The repulsions have startled me, but only
Repulses old age whose white hairs alarm it

Upon a liver weakened by its fractures

4. I used to sell singing girls but never ceased
To blame the selling of singing girls

5. A beauty who did not act well, but maybe
Evil poured onto a beauty of ill deeds

6. I was amazed at her displaying coquetry though I love her
And my soul disobeyed me in love so I obeyed it

7. The cheek and night complained, its darkness confused
A chick of noble lineage passed by its tomb

8. And I’m not one who visits kings over cheeks
If her purposes and travel bags do not depart

9. It frequents the white palaces from Babylonian land
Where its twittering and refined manners meet

10. When the overlooking tower aims its glance
With the stares of a loving gazelle, bleary are its eyes

11. Its purpose illuminates for it the way to travel
When the darkness of a gloomy night overwhelms it

12. It visits the Commander of the Faithful and beneath him
Are the plains of the country, vast is its expanse

13. When we alight in a town, its people mention
Tales of his benevolence, widely announced

14. It protected the fortress of Islam so enemies recoiled
And they knew none would covet its loftiness

15. And when it shepherded the flock of commoners, it drove them
From barrenness, the greens of the land its pasture

16. I knew with certainty since Ja’far entrusted
Himself to God regarding it, He will not waste it

17. Doubt departed from our sights with a caliphate
That removed injustice from us, healed are its wounds

18. It is the sun whose light the truth forever graces
And it rose in hearts’ secrets, its ascent

19. I grieved for my maternal uncles, Rabee’ah, when
Its dwellings were devoid of them, desolate their homes

20. And their songs grew desolate, scattered all
And they came to swig death, when once

21. Their morning drinks were to swig wine, sips exalted
When they dispersed from a battle that gathered them

22. To another, blood whose abundance cannot cease flowing
The wife blames her husband’s honor when he sleeps

23. Without avenging, while he is her bedmate
Hotheaded ignorance and arrogant zeal

24. That made men yield to its power
Valiant warriors whose chests seethe

25. With their hatreds until their armors tighten
They kill the dearest souls with hands they scarcely

26. Obey when embroiled in war, blood overflowing
They remember kinship so their tears pour

27. Swords sever ties of condemned kin, cut off
Were it not for the Commander of the Faithful and his justice

28. Bloodshed and crimes would have resumed
And a root of the Taghlib tribe would have endured

29. Through which its branches and offshoots persisted
You raised the fallen flank of Taghlib’s daughter

30. When she despaired her prostrate form would rise
You were God’s trustee, protector of its life

31. And your opening was its intercessor that day
By my life, you truly ennobled it with a deed

32. To them, and a shade of favor lingered spreading among them
You reconciled them after morals had scattered them

33. Whose return is slow, that self-restraint contains
So its misguided saw clear evidence and were guided

34. And its arrogant humbled, heads bowed down
And the judge ruled justly between them so they parted

35. And its lowered satisfied therewith and its lofty
So spear points were fixed and sword blades sheathed

36. Its slender straight and curved, its lofty
Hearts that blazed calmed, their hatreds quelled

37. And eyes that watched little slept, their winkings ceased
They came to you, inclining toward you steadily

38. And you distanced them from what their tendencies disliked
They repeat praise as though it were

39. Springdownpour on the garden of grief, its bloom
They shyly evade seeing you with faces

40. Wherever sin, its defiant obeyed, its gentle resisted
No excuse but that the patience of its forbearing

41. Was foolish toward the evil its villainy earned
And a mother fears battle upon her son

42. For the first burst of zeal their crowds encountered
You tied with the peace of the people its hostile intensity

43. So its audacity calmed and its chests eased
You remained forgiving, excellently

44. Upon Taghlib until its shadow persisted
