1. The enemies have revealed their souls to you,
So direct your ill suspicions towards the brethren.
١. أَمّا العُداةُ فَقَد أَرَوكَ نُفوسَهُم
فَاقصِد بِسوءِ ظُنونِكَ الإِخوانا
2. My soul abhors that I should humiliate one brought low,
Or that my unruliness should slacken the rein.
٢. تَنحاشُ نَفسي أَن أَذِلَّ مَقادَةً
وَيَزيدُ شَغبي أَن أَلينَ عِنانا
3. And I conceal from a friend's shoulder purity
Lest colours become confused on him.
٣. وَأَخِفُّ عَن كَتِفِ الصَديقِ نَزاهَةً
مِن قَبلِ أَن يَتَلَوَّنَ الأَلوانا
4. A brother went astray, but in his affair
I found naught but to eschew and shun him.
٤. وَأَخٍ أَرابَ فَلَم أَجِد في أَمرِهِ
إِلّا التَماسُكَ عَنهُ وَالهِجرانا
5. I was loath to ask him for a forgiving hand,
Or to employ my tongue to aid him.
٥. أَغبَبتُهُ أَن أَستَميحَ لَهُ يَداً
أَو أَن أُعَنِّيَ فِيَّ مِنهُ لِسانا
6. And when I did not seek his advantage,
He was hurt whether absent or present.
٦. وَأَراهُ لَمّا لَم أُطالِب نَفعَهُ
أَنشا يَضُرُّ تَغَيُّباً وَعِيانا
7. No hope remained from you, but it has come
To gladden me, making clear explanation.
٧. ماكانَ مِن أَمَلٍ وَمِنكَ فَقَد أَتى
يَسري إِلَيَّ مُبَيِّناً تِبيانا
8. If that to which her secrets led you
Were good, her talk would have been public.
٨. لَو كانَ ما أَدّى إِلَيكَ سِرارُها
خَيراً لَكانَ حَديثُها إِعلانا
9. If that was due to your bachelorhood
In which you were smeared with mud,
٩. إِن كانَ ذاكَ لِعُزبَةِ البَعثِ الَّذي
جُمِّرتَ فيهِ فَدونَكَ الصِبيانا
10. And from wonders is my suspicion of you
After you had been the pure one to me.
١٠. وَمِنَ العَجائِبِ تُهمَتي لَكَ بَعدَما
كُنتَ الصَفِيَّ لَدَيَّ وَالخُلصانا
11. And my expecting evil from you with effort
When it is just that I should expect kindness.
١١. وَتَوَقُّعي مِنكَ الإِساءَةَ جاهِداً
وَالعَدلُ أَن أَتَوَقَّعَ الإِحسانا
12. And just as it gladdens you if my touch is soft, pleased,
Likewise fear my roughness when angry.
١٢. وَكَما يَسُرُّكَ لينُ مَسّي راضِياً
فَكَذاكَ فَاخشَ خِشونَتي غَضبانا
