1. Longing resides in his ribs, ever restless,
And memories stir in his heart, ever wistful.
١. شَوقٌ لَهُ بَينَ الأَضالِعُ هاجِسُ
وَتَذَكُّرٌ لِلصَدرِ مِنهُ وَساوِسُ
2. At times the youth's cheek would save him from sorrow,
And the soft curls of night, ever wakeful.
٢. وَلَرُبَّما نَجّى الفَتى مِن هَمِّهِ
وَخدُ القِلاصِ وَلَيلُهُنَّ الدامِسُ
3. Baghdad was unfair when it shunned
Its dweller, though once a congenial abode.
٣. ما أَنصَفَت بَغدادُ حينَ تَوَحَّشَت
لِنَزيلِها وَهيَ المَحَلُّ الآنِسُ
4. Neither Tayyi nor the Persian held sacred
Our kinship or friendship, as custom bestowed.
٤. لَم يَرعَ لَي حَقَّ القَرابَةِ طَيِّئٌ
فيها وَلا حَقَّ الصَداقَةِ فارِسُ
5. High hopes, who pins on you after affection
You've severed from me? I'm filled with despair.
٥. أَعَلِيُّ مَن يَأمُلكَ بَعدَ مَوَدَّةٍ
ضَيَّعتَها مِنّي فَإِنّي آيِسُ
6. You promised we'd meet on Thursday, but passed
Were five Thursdays since the day you picked there.
٦. واعَدتَني يَومَ الخَميسِ وَقَد مَضى
مِن بَعدِ مَوعِدِكَ الخَميسُ الخامِسُ
7. Tell the Prince, for he is the moon that
Lit up gloomy days with his smile so rare.
٧. قُل لِلأَميرِ فَإِنَّهُ القَمَرُ الَّذي
ضَحِكَت بِهِ الأَيّامُ وَهيَ عَوابِسُ
8. You've paraded before me men, each of whom
Falls short of my goal, lazy and careless.
٨. قَدَّمتَ قُدّامي رِجالاً كُلُّهُم
مُتَخَلِّفٌ عَن غايَتي مُتَقاعِسُ
9. You've humbled me until those envious
Of me rejoiced and gloated at my fall.
٩. وَأَذَلتَني حَتّى لَقَد أَشمَتَّ بي
مَن كانَ يَحسُدُ مِنهُمُ وَيُنافِسُ
10. Yet I, though unguarded, elucidated
The path of verse, a perilous scrawl.
١٠. وَأَنا الَّذي أَوضَحتَ غَيرَ مُدافَعٍ
نَهجَ القَوافي وَهيَ رَسمٌ دارِسُ
11. Known am I in East and West together,
Like one seated in every council and hall.
١١. وَشُهِرتُ في شَرقِ البِلادِ وَغَربِها
فَكَأَنَّني في كُلِّ نادٍ جالِسُ
12. These lines at dawn I have neatly marshalled,
To be gifted to you, like brides for a ball.
١٢. هَذي القَوافي قَد زَفَفتُ صِباحَها
تُهدى إِلَيكَ كَأَنَّهُنَّ عَرائِسُ
13. With you is wellness and peace. As for me,
I take leave while they remain in your thrall.
١٣. وَلَكَ السَلامَةُ وَالسَلامُ فَإِنَّني
غادٍ وَهُنَّ عَلى عُلاكَ حَبائِسُ
