To lessen the distance from a distant love

Our caravan headed for the gardens of Iraq

Would that one steadily ascending

13. A lineage supported like a flaming fire
He won glories in a time no tribe boasted

14. A hopeful of fertile meadows without a praiser
Alas! Striking from your dust comes a flash

15. Even were the horse’s reins in his hands
You refused out of pride the meanness of his soul

16. A quality refusing paradise for an immortal
The exaggerations of your adversaries are returned

17. By an effort with which you tire the envious
They strived to catch up with you but the greatest

18. Deprivation is destined for the ambitious striver

19. You alerted the lost register though
The causes of desolation bowed to it

20. With a sword-like decisiveness its cover was shaken
By the past glories through a long-armed one

21. And if you give to the dear one little he is
Humiliated by it and obeys without resisting

22. And if you seek booty, it takes flight from one standing
Among those you claim and rises from one sitting

23. My God, you are the light of dark conditions
Until the situation improves and the corrupt is rectified

24. How many favors upon you are not twisted
Spending the night tossing in a wandering abode

25. You sent its strange news seeking
The farthest horizons however remote

26. And I see one who admits to a blessing not flow
Through the people the goodness of its tale like the ungrateful
