1. With your eyes my ruin and my sigh's length,

6. I see dreams’ lies as truth, and how often
Have my ears listened to unreliable news.

7. Whatever was right or wrong, it has healed
The fever of a urinator and the yearning of an enamored one.

8. Why have the days’ turns insisted
On only my aloofness and filial disobedience?

9. Separating me from my people and my friends
And coming between me and my intimate companion.

10. We see ourselves obstinately in the days’ hands complaining
Of a strengthened knot in its bareness and tightness.

11. Today's free man is not he for whom
The nights’ turns will be free tomorrow.

12. Misfortunes have differed for us, so they broke
The fast with the thirst of one shipwrecked and drowned.

13. Whenever disasters struck me
With loud unbroken bones and piercing pangs,

14. I held myself tall, showed no fawning to any gloating enemy,
Nor sent any complaint to other than a sympathetic friend.

15. I see every hurter powerless to hurt me
If he is not supported against me by appointment.

16. Were it not for ignorance’ extreme, it would not be thought slight
To endure my disfavor and the burning of my pyre.

17. The furthest consequences show themselves to me in their beginnings,
For my eye, and the unseen's veil is not thin.

18. I still fear, since the son of Bilbak appeared,
Lest breadth become straitened.

19. I had no property but a bird’s daring,
Added to the deep sea by Egypt.

20. If I missed my goal among the scoundrels, I could not
Retrieve it by catching up.

21. So I do not blame the soul for losing an object
Of desire, if my time was not suited to it.

22. Was it not easier to fulfill the duty of justice
For the aggressor, or lighten my rights?

23. When we sought the plan of halves, the son of gross, manifest immorality and corruption
Rejected it for us.

24. And of a whore who led to the evil of a fellow whore
Resembling a dog among dogs of pure breed.

28. Much distance lies between me and you, we are indeed

29. And the most deserving people of my disdain
Are my enemy’s enemy or my friend’s friend.
