1. Why do you fear me, I do not know
I have neither palaces nor armies?!
١. لِمَاذَا تَخَافُونَنِي، لَسْتُ أَدْرِي
فَلَيْسَ لَدَيَّ قُصُورٌ وَجُنْدُ؟!
2. Why do you boil with rage against me
When I have neither power nor grandeur
٢. لِمَاذَا تَفُورُونَ غَيْظًا عَلَيَّ
وَلَيْسَ لَدَيَّ سُعَادٌ وَهِنْدُ
3. I have no wealth dancing before me
Though what you have cannot be counted
٣. وَلاَ المَالُ يَرْقُصُ بَيْنَ يَدَيَّ
وَإِنْ كَانَ مَا عِنْدَكُمْ لاَ يُعَدُّ
4. I have left wine to you
Varieties that intoxicate your limbs
٤. وَلاَ الخَمْرُ، عِفْتُ الخُمُورَ لَكُمْ
صُنُوفًا بِأَوْصَالِكُمْ تَسْتَبِدُّ
5. I have left the ladders for the infatuated
I have left the thrones as they are tightened
٥. وَعِفْتُ السَّلاَلِمَ لِلْمُغْرَمِينَ
وَعِفْتُ الكَرَاسِيَّ وَهْيَ تُشَدُّ
6. I have left the theaters until I was fed up
If a star disappeared when it used to appear
٦. وَعِفْتُ المَسَارِحَ حَتَّى لَأَجْهَ
لُ إِنْ غَابَ نَجْمٌ مَتَى كَانَ يَبْدُو
7. I have left ostentation, if only
All the slaves were free, for I am a slave
٧. وَعِفْتُ البَرِيقَ، فَلَوْ قَدْ تَأَلَّ
هَ كُلُّ العَبِيدِ، فَإِنِّيَ عَبْدُ
8. I have left you the enticements of life
All together so what more do you want?!
٨. تَرَكْتُ لَكُمْ مُغْرَيَاتِ الحَيَاةِ
جَمِيعًا فَمَاذَا تُرِيدُونَ بَعْدُ؟!
9. Have I remained a thorn in your throats
Despite myself, it is not my intention!

10. Have I remained erect in your path
Obstructing your march, or preventing?
١٠. أَمَا زِلْتُ فِي حَلْقِكُمْ شَوْكَةً
عَلَى رَغْمِ أَنْفِي، وَمَا لِيَ قَصْدُ!
11. Has my love for my Lord and my purity
Remained for some of you an irreversible danger?!
١١. أَمَا زِلْتُ فِي دَرْبِكُمْ شَامِخًا
يُعِيقُ مَسِيرَتَكُمْ، أَوْ يَصُدُّ؟
12. As if what is between my sides
Of certainty and light is rejection or worse
١٢. أَمَا زَالَ حُبِّي لِرَبِّي، وَطُهْرِي
عَلَى بَعْضِكُمْ خَطَرًا لاَ يُرَدُّ؟!
13. So you gather in crowds against me
Composed of misguidance and hatred
١٣. كَأَنَّ الَّذِي بَيْنَ جَنْبَيَّ مِنْ
يَقِينٍ وَنُورٍ، رَدًى أَوْ أَشَدُّ
14. A pack of wolves, a swarm of flies
A swarm of locusts, a horde, a horde
١٤. فَتَجْتَمِعُونَ حُشُودًا عَلَيَّ
يُؤَلِّفُهُنَّ ضَلاَلٌ وَحِقْدُ
15. I will remain the only day of life
Whether Amr and Zayd have willed or protested
١٥. فَحَشْدُ ذِئَابٍ، وَحَشْدُ ذُبَابٍ
وَحَشْدُ جَرَادٍ، وَحَشْدٌ، وَحَشْدُ
16. I will remain so do not ask the turnabouts of fate
And how do you repel the tyrants?!

17. And how can the blind discern
The cycle of fate, no matter how much they transgressed and abused power
١٧. سَأَبْقَى نَهَارَ الحَيَاةِ الوَحِيدَ
أَرَادَ أَمِ احْتَجَّ عَمَرٌو وَزَيْدُ
18. I will shine in the day, or tomorrow
For fate ebbs and flows
١٨. سَأْبَقَى فَلاَ تَسْأَلُوا النَّائِبَاتِ
وَكَيْفَ عَلَى السَّادِرِينَ تَرُدُّ؟!
١٩. وَكَيْفَ يَعِي دَوْرَةَ الدَّهْرِ عُمْيُ الْ
بَصَائِرِ، مَهْمَا طَغَوْا وَاسْتَبَدُّوا
٢٠. سَأُشْرِقُ فِي اليَوْمِ، أَوْ فِي غَدٍ
فَإِنَّ المَقَادِيرَ جَزْرٌ وَمَدُّ
