1. O friend, lovers bear no blame
If dawn breaks from the horizon of union

2. Lovers are not at fault if the passion of love
Its secrecy exposed, infatuation erupted

3. They forgave themselves, did not begrudge it
When they knew that to forgive is gain

4. They were glad only in remembering their beloved
And they had, in the length of their time, joys

5. So the caller of love called them with a call
And they went out rejoicing and at peace

6. Rise, my cupbearer, to the wine, and serve us
A drink that illuminates souls when drunk

7. Or don’t you see the ancient cupbearer circling it
As if it were a lamp in his cup?

8. It made Adam drunk with bliss once
And clothed him in a robe and wrap

9. And so too Noah in the ark got drunk
And he had with that a tenuous excuse

10. And by drinking it Abraham became a reveler
So its pacts with God are true

11. When Moses drew near to hear it
He threw down his staff and tablets were shattered

12. And likewise Son of Mary enraptured by it
An expectant wanderer drinking it

13. And Muhammad, Pride of the Lofty, Honor of Guidance
He whom the Opener chose for drinking it
