1. I hung it up, and the sword was between me and it,
A gazelle, yet a slayer of the mighty.
١. وَعُلِّقتُهُ وَالسَيفُ بَيني وَبَينَهُ
غَزالاً وَلَكن قاتِلٌ لِلضراغمِ
2. Of the Turks - either its beauty allures,
Or its blade fells the bold warriors.
٢. مِن التُركِ إِمّا حُسنُهُ فَهوَ فاتِن
وَإما سَطاهُ فَهوَ فتكُ الضَبارِمِ
3. Zealous over the beauty that is its beauty,
As if the passionate lover were attached to it.
٣. غَيورٌ عَلى الحُسنِ الَّذي هُوَ حُسنُهُ
كَأنَّ بِهِ عشقَ المُحبِّ الملازِمِ
4. Oh, how I wonder, what is the state of a lover
Who threw himself into perilous predicaments?
٤. فَيا لَيتَ شِعري كَيفَ حالةُ عاشِقٍ
رَمى نَفسَهُ في المُهلِكات العَظائِمِ
5. No union except through the stolen glance
Of an onlooker during an inattentive moment unknown to him.
٥. فَلا وَصلَ إِلا باختلاسَةِ ناظِرٍ
عَلى غَفلَةٍ مِنهُ وَليسَ بِعالِمِ
6. If only he knew, the one looking upon
His beauty would be met with dragging shackles.
٦. وَلو أَنَّهُ يَدري الَّذي هُوَ ناظِرٌ
إِلى حُسنِهِ جازى بجرِّ الغَلاصِمِ
7. I will be patient, or death will come, or it will be seen
To bend to a melting, wandering, crazed love.
٧. سَأَصبِرُ أَو تَأتي المَنيةُ أَو يُرى
يَلينُ لصَبٍّ ذاهبِ الحِسِّ هائِمِ
8. And I consoled myself that it will soon dissipate
Her passion, and she will take on the ways of beasts.
٨. وَعَزَّيتُ نَفسي أَنَّهُ سَوفَ يَنقَضي
هَواها وَأَن يَسلو سلُوَّ البَهائِمِ
9. For every beauty, its fate is to wither,
And every darkness will fade under the light.
٩. فَكُلُّ جَمالٍ للزَوالِ مآلُهُ
وَكُلُّ ظَلومٍ سَوفَ يُبلى بِظالِمِ
10. Hair will soon cloud over his cheek
And he will remain in the darkness of adversities.
١٠. سَيظلِمُهُ شَعرٌ يَحلُّ بِخَدِّهِ
سَريعاً فَيَبقى في سَوادِ المَظالِمِ
