1. Will my life be pleasant or my soul delighted
After the passing of Nudhair in Ramses?
١. أَمِن بَعدِ أَن حَلَّت نُضَيرة في الرَمسِ
تَطيبُ حَياتي أَو تَلَذُّ بِها نَفسِي
2. A maiden, about sixteen years of age
Stricken with a strange illness of differing nature
٢. فَتاةٌ عَراها نَحوَ سِتَةِ أَشهرٍ
سُقامٌ غَريبٌ جاءَ مُختَلِف الجِنسِ
3. Love and fever, then coughing, sneezing
And nosebleeds - who can endure five afflictions?
٣. فحبنٌ وَحُمّى ثُمَ سُلٌّ وَسَعلَة
وَسَكبٌ فَمَن يَقوى عَلى عِللٍ خَمسِ
4. She had seen in her dreams repeatedly that she
Would depart this world for the Divine Presence
٤. وَكانَت رَأَت رُؤيا مِراراً وَأَنَّها
تَروح مِن الدُنيا إِلى حَضرَةِ القُدسِ
5. So her body weakened and she was content with what she saw
Of gardens, though life was full of despair
٥. فَقرَّ حَشاها وَاِطمَأَنَّت لما رَأَت
جِنانا وَكانَت مِن حَياةٍ عَلى يَأسِ
6. Never complaining or grumbling of distress
Nor mentioning what agony she bore of despair
٦. فَما ضجِرَت يَوماً وَلا اِشتَكَت الضَنى
وَلا ذَكَرَت ماذا تُقاسِي مِن اليأسِ
7. She passed away on Monday after we had seen
The horn of gazelle dawn like the wild ox
٧. قَضَت نَحبَها في يَوم الاثنينِ بَعدَما
تبدّى لَنا قرنُ الغَزالَةِ كَالوَرسِ
8. The people prayed over her, praising
In a dark and dreary tomb of veils
٨. فَصَلّى عَلَيها الناسُ يثنونَ وَاِنثَنَوا
بِها لضريحٍ مُظلمٍ موحشِ الطَمسِ
9. The deeds that preceded her provide comfort
Greater than any human company
٩. يُونِّسها في رَمسِها العمل الَّذي
تَقدَّمَها أَعظِم بِهِ ثُمَّ من أُنسِ
10. She went to a generous and pure Lord
Absolved of any blemish or impurity
١٠. وَراحَت إلى رَبٍّ كَريمٍ نَظيفَةً
مبرأةً مِن كُلِّ ذام وَمِن رِجسِ
11. Women have not born one similar to her
How can stars compare to the radiant sun?
١١. وَما وَلَد النسوانُ أُنثى شَبيهها
وَأَنّى يُقاسُ الأَنجمُ الزهرُ بِالشَمسِ
12. The bloom of her cheeks' grace never ceased
Sacrificing night and day for the Merciful
١٢. وَكانَت نضارُ نِعمَت الخَودُ لَم تَزَل
على طاعَةِ الرَحمنِ تُضحي كَما تُمسي
13. A reciter of the Quran, repeating verses
Dividing time between contemplation and study
١٣. نَجيةُ قُرآن تُردِّدُ آيَهُ
مُقسمةً بَينَ التَدَبُّرِ وَالدَرسِ
14. Bearing the traces of the Master of Mankind
Muhammad, sent to jinn and humankind
١٤. وَحامِلَةُ الآثارِ عَن سَيِّدِ الوَرى
مُحمدٍ المَبعوثِ للجِنِّ وَالإِنسِ
15. She studied in Egypt and Hejaz and dwelt
In Mecca, spending gold, not mere coins
١٥. رَوَتها بِمصر وَالحِجازِ وَجاوَرَت
بِمَكةَ تَسخو بِالدَنانيرِ لا الفلسِ
16. She visited the Messenger of God, best of those who walked
The lanes of Taibah and studied its quarters
١٦. وَزارَت رَسولَ اللَهِ أَفضَلَ مَن مَشى
بِطيبَةَ وَاِحتَلَّت بِأَربُعِها الدرسِ
17. Praying over him at times, at other times
Whispering or reciting aloud
١٧. مصلِّيَة حيناً عَلَيهِ وَتارَة
مُسلمةً في الجَهرِ مِنها وَفي الهَمسِ
18. She possessed stunning beauty and eloquence
Clearer than the sun, more articulate than a storyteller
١٨. وَحازَت جَمالاً بارِعاً وَفَصاحة
فَأَوضَحُ مِن شَمس وَأَفصَحُ مِن قسِّ
19. She was distinguished in grammar in her time
Writing with wondrous skill
١٩. وَقَد عنيت بِالنَحو عُظمَ زَمانِها
وَتَكتُب خَطاً نادِراً ذا بَراعَةٍ
20. You see her scorn for gardens in her attire
The garden never opened blossoms more beautiful
٢٠. يُريك اِزدِهاءَ الرَوضِ في أَبهَجِ اللَبسِ
فَما الرَوضُ مَطلولاً تفتَّحَ زَهرُهُ
21. Than what her fingers adorned
With black fabric against brilliant silks
٢١. فراقَ لذي عَينٍ وَشاقَ لذي حِسِّ
بِأَبهَجَ مِما قَد وَشَتهُ أَنامِلٌ
22. If the son of Muqla saw it, his jaw would drop
And bite his hand in amazement at her skill
٢٢. لَها بِسَوادِ النَفسِ في أَبيَضِ الطُرسِ
فَلَو أَبصَرتهُ لابنِ مُقلَةَ مقلَةٌ
23. The son of Hilal is not worth a fragment
Of Nudhair's triumph
٢٣. لأَغضَت حَياءً وَهوَ قَد عَضَّ في الخَمسِ
وَنَجلُ هِلالٍ لا يُساوي قُلامَةً
24. She watered a garden where Nudhair blossomed
With soil from Al-Muzain and everflowing palms
٢٤. لظُفر نُضار
سَقى رَوضَةً حَلَّت نضار بتربها
25. The clouds of mercy continue to water it
In the present and future after the past
٢٥. مِن المُزنِ وَبلٌ دائمُ السحِّ وَالبَجسِ
وَلا زالَ تَسقيهِ سَحائبُ رَحمَةٍ
٢٦. تواليهِ في آتٍ وَحالٍ يَلي أَمسِ
