1. Marvel at the Sheikh of grammarians and men of letters,
And the Imam of the most virtuous Imams.
١. عُج بِشَيخِ النُحاة وَالأدباءِ
وَإِمامِ الأَئِمَةِ الفُضَلاءِ
2. You will find protection with Rim, sheltered in his care,
He has protected you even from executioners.
٢. تَجِدِ الريمَ راتِعاً في حِماهُ
قَد حَماهُ حَتّى مِن الرقباءِ
3. O Imam, you have never ceased to bestow bounties upon me,
Blessings too numerous to be counted.
٣. يا إِماماً لَمّا تَزَل مُسدِياً لي
نِعَماً قَد جَلَت عَن الإحصاءِ
4. If the gazelle strayed beyond your protection,
We would take revenge according to the custom of poets.
٤. لَو يحلُّ الغَزالُ غَير حِماكُمُ
لانتَصَفنا بِسُنَّةِ الشُعَراءِ
5. If my heart is not content with this,
My tongue lavishes you with juicy praise.
٥. إِن يَكُ القَلبُ غَيرَ راضٍ بِهَذا
فَلِساني عَلَيك رَطبُ الثَناءِ
6. My mind lost its way at the repulse of Rim,
As if I wandered in the dark.
٦. ضَلَّ عَقلي بِصَدِّ ريمِك حَتّى
لكأني أَسيرُ في الظَلماءِ
7. What sea could pour forth my expressions of grief?
What embers could flame within my vitals?
٧. أَيُّ بَحرٍ يَفيضُ مِن عَبَراتي
أَيُّ جَمرٍ يَشُبُّ مِن أَحشائي
8. To me, the gathering of opposites is not impossible,
I who can unite fire and water.
٨. لَيسَ جَمعُ الأَضدادِ عِندي مُحالاً
إِنَّني جامِع لِنار وَماءِ
9. By my father Awḥur's sleepless eyes, a beloved
Who made my reason take flight and prolonged my torment.
٩. بِأَبي أَحوَر الجُفونِ رَبيبٌ
طارَ عَقلي بِهِ وَطالَ عَنائي
10. If he appeared, a glance from him would heal me,
And if he was absent, I said to myself:
١٠. إِن تبدّى فَحَسبُ طَرفي مِنهُ
نَظرَة وَهيَ لَو تَدوم شِفائي
11. "Patience, for splendor is with the splendid."
١١. وَلَئِن غابَ شَخصُهُ قُلت نَفسي
اصبِري فَالبَهاءُ عِندَ البَهاءِ
