1. The swords remove harm from those who bear them,
And build glories for the generous, the bounteous,

2. Not all those with dewy hands always strive,
Nor all those who plunge into wars are warriors,

3. Generosity is not good if forced to be shown,
If it is not found in the souls that hoard,

4. The white swords do no good without their edges
If they have never been sharpened by resolves,

5. Wisdom is not praiseworthy in the youth’s nature
If it has no accompanying ignorance,

6. The days have continued to pass since I knew them
Yet none of them except the calamities,

7. I made you the best part of my soul and companion
So be not one who twists and contends,

8. Whenever I saw fate I saw it either honouring
The generous or humbling the lowly it makes peace with,

9. Whatever glory and wealth I missed from it
I am not regretful since I attained the pilgrimage in it,

10. And I do not blame fate except that among the loved ones
It has been unjust to my heart,

11. Its separation has made me drink from its noxiousnesses
A poison it does not give to empty,

12. How often have I been glad at lightning for charming names,
While my heart knows the falsehood in it,

13. You forbid me by assignations the union with which
I see celebrations but they are bereavements

14. I will heal with the cold of despair the inflammation of passion
Even if sorrow and separation do not cool it

15. The full moon relates the brightness of his face
And my hands relate about generosity and the clouds

16. To you, O Commander of the Faithful, hopes
Settled on you by covenants guard you

17. We gave you from the intense praise poems
At the hands of the eminent whose rings are their seals

18. We did not face you except subdued and smiling
Your face joyful, your honour safe

19. Your generosity made wealth disappear as if
Your generosity awake, and your wealth sleeping

20. You rose so high that every blinker was certain
You are a star twinkling on the horizon

21. You were found to be by every devout one thinking
You divide livelihoods among the people

22. If Hatem had seen your excessive generosity
He would blame you for giving, like Ka‘b and Hatem

23. There is the feast, O people’s feast
And who is it a lasting feast for the land

24. Joy has appeared for you in every aspect
The Arabs and non-Arabs have presented you with gifts

25. Your generosity a record for the obedient and a rain for them
Your sword among the disobedient judging and ruler

26. If an oath-breaker wickedly disobeys you, you do not flap
Your wings at him, and the departing days

27. If he intends betrayal, God shows his secret
Revealing all he was hiding

28. For you are the sword of truth and God is its striker
And the system of religion and God its organiser

29. You are none but God’s proof; by it the land shined
Until, by its brilliance, even the adversarial have guidance

30. The enemies aspire by you what lies between them
And you: by it the cutting swords

31. When the cavalry desired a land it was as though
Its bodies took flight, and the rising dust,

32. And the cavalry fleet-footed, deafening, it was as though
Your flashing in the skirmishes and the attacks overwhelming

33. When you intended to raid them their pigeons
Informing the enemies you are resolved

34. Their fear left them no hands
And none of their heroes remained who would resist

35. So, O victor, as long as you meet a combatant
And O defeated one, when you make peace

36. Just so, O son of the Imams, you continued victorious
Your wealth plundered and your sword triumphing

37. Over this your noble fathers were pleased
Their deeds being the shedding of dew and the battles,

38. Had they witnessed your state in peace and war
Lu’ayy and Hashim would have ransomed you with joy

39. For every enemy there is from your sword a slayer
And in each fortress of yours one who demolishes

40. Your position a journey in the lands always triumphant
Your silence in the ear of time troubles them

41. You defeated the afflictions of fate in planning and aid
And no defeater of days has preceded you

42. You reined in everything with wisdom and left
No creature seen to exist in confusion

43. You climbed high until you met no climber
You were generous until you found none who would match you

44. You created and excelled the time’s riches
So that beside you little game of the generous remained

45. The morning sun is crown for your kingdom in the heights
The blossoms of the sparkling stars are its pillars

46. It is as if none were left but you, and none
Ever begotten a chief who ruled creation but Adam

47. I will make my love crowned over you with praise
And my silence from you will in it blame me

48. And what are you but sudden downpours
Accompanied by shining moons andPleiades

49. How many are the ignorant who declare love for you in their ignorance
Yet struggle would be preferable to such affection

50. The person’s little love with wisdom profits
While the youth’s love in ignorance does no good

51. I declare to you the love and its best
And its finest is that I know you

52. Whenever I lean away from you I am certain
I am on a course against you for which I am sinful

53. Do not include me with a group who were led
To love you only by fear and then dirhams

54. If they declared the love sincerely their ignorance
Of you would not protect them from it

55. The people differ clearly in merit
Some are people, some beasts

56. For it to grant you its blessings, the nights that dawned
For us radiant while they are gloomy darkness

57. If the days of this time had any shame
My blaming them would not cease

58. How can one who has been wronged by them be pleased with the days
When their lights are darkness in his eyes

59. I see people, but most of them enjoyments, many a little
Those present have passed away, a people no more

60. They are inferior, the generous feels contempt for them
It is as if they are diseases and illness

61. Whoever is not knowledgeable of people then he does not
Make a mistake that if collected they are sheep

62. I saw in them sometimes an ambition that reached
Where worries and aspirations do not cease

63. To God belongs a state that humbled me and distances me
And I desire its nearness to me and it withdraws

64. Do not blame me for my fortune for it has spread
Over me the injustice of its deprivation of comprehension

65. It has released to the nights its tyranny, and who
His days have darkened him shall be darkened

66. Glory that its mention will elevate and
A sword whose edge glory will not blunt shall aid me

67. I do not praise resolve unless spears are shattered by it
And by it blood is harvested with swords

68. Unless the cavalry mixed at noon with horses charging
And blood was stirred between the two armies

69. Unless an onslaught was launched against the enemies by me
At which Indian swords would smile

70. The person has no pride but by his proven mettle
Not by what adorns speeches and the pen

71. I am the one who has milked time of its halves
And I tasted from it hot and cold

72. Anger does not overwhelm my patience when I lose it
Just as patience does not restrain my anger when I avenge

73. I am the son of the one whose proven might
Made the Arabs and non-Arabs submit to his sublimity

74. The Imam Mudda, the best by whom
Rule was ennobled and elevated the breeze

75. I proudly praise, Commander of the Faithful, for
Dew, glory, and generosity prayed on you

76. You make your hearing deaf to those who blame you for generosity
Your hearing has no deafness to the caller of dew

77. The honour of your glory is in benefaction unattainable
The honour of your wealth among the upright divided

78. Whoever has not made you his refuge against people
Has ended without having in the land a place of refuge

79. O divine Proof! For God it has been manifested and clarified
Until by its brilliance nations gained guidance

80. O reliever of those who complain and their saviour
To ease after annihilation had destroyed them

81. If it were not for Mudda the Commander of the Faithful, guidance
Would not have gained honour and blessings poured forth in our time

82. In every place of known virtue he reaches out a hand
And in every true belief he has a step

83. More wondrous, splendid, illuminating for the onlooker
It is as if among the heights of Hashim a flag

84. Sweet-natured in morals, fierce at times,
Gentle at others, in his cheeks moles

85. Good was his birth from Ahmad, creation
And lineages and customs were purified from him

86. He faces accusations of lies and censure from him without
Even his righteous feats failing to support him

87. I seek God’s forgiveness! I cannot enumerate his virtues,
Neither fully nor partially, even if I were all eloquent mouth and lip

88. How can the creation enumerate in number one whose
Likeness they cannot find at all among them

89. I have seen none but the Regent’s praise as ornament
With which ink, paper and pen become decorated

90. It is as if his rule is guidance and preaching
And his days joy for the people, smiling

91. Still you build the edifice of glory as long as a
Sun has risen and cloud rain poured

92. Adorning literature and wisdom through it
It appears to its listener in all it evokes

93. In his hearing to be a decisive oath
I have made you the best part of my soul and companion
