1. The distribution of death is an equitable distribution
Each living being gets intoxicated with his share

2. Everyone is equal in it, regardless of any disparity between them
Neither the prince remains nor the subordinate

3. We are heedless, while death seeks us
An insistent seeker, determined and able

4. We relish wishes, but they are false hopes
So we prolong hopes, but they are deceptions

5. Think of death in life, for it is misguidance
In death, reflecting is virtuous

6. None is saved from deceptions except one
Whose grave is carved into his heart

7. Death has troubled the serenity of my life, and is there in the world
A life not afflicted with such disturbance?

8. I remembered the calamities of my people
And my ancestors, I am the most mindful of my people

9. Where are my eminent people, by whom
The spiteful would die, and the poor would live

10. Had a group of people been protected by a protector
My people would have possessed honor and goodness

11. Where are my fathers who sacrificed themselves
And by them the nights were illuminated

12. Where is my grandfather Hussein son of Ali
Where is Zaid the aggrieved, the wounded?

13. Where is our king al-Mahdi the rightly guided
Where is al-Muizz and al-Mansur?

14. Where are those virtues, merits and minds
Rather, where is that wisdom?

15. Where is that sultan, king, favor
Oppression, might, prominence and manifestation?

16. Where are those armies, pride
Hordes, masses and large numbers?

17. The hand of death scattered them, so they perished
And after palaces, graves enclosed them

18. A righteous predecessor and possession of truth
By them, affairs are set right and straightened

19. Then we lived, sustained by the mouth of envy
Our life from dust and rocks

20. So we lived for an age
All of us appearing content and delighted

21. No offspring of al-Muizz has lived except us
Every deceased one is remembered for his son

22. Then the hand of death afflicted Aqeel
While he was like a fresh tender twig

23. When youth shook its shoulders
And the time of his flourishing arrived

24. He barely surpassed thirty years
Except by a few nights not worth counting

25. Where is that radiant, bright
Openness, and shining, illuminating sight?

26. Where is that sound nature, that gentle
Disposition, sweetness, brilliance and light?

27. Where is that good omen that appeared
From his brilliance, heralding good news to onlookers?

28. He was of pure conscience, of sweet temperament
In his secret affair there was no difficulty

29. Loyal in friendship, gentle in demeanor
Never transgressing in any situation or purification

30. After that intimacy, he became desolate
While he is at the bottom of an abandoned pit

31. Oh! The agony that has in the blackness of the eye
A tear, and in the heart a sigh

32. How can a man remain when his father and brother are gone
For his rope has been severed?

33. That I unite and my lineage and branch endure
And Allah knows what hearts conceal

34. So I will cry for you O Aqeel with a heart
In which there is a blazing fire of grief over you

35. I used to think I was resistant
And no misfortune could bend my resolve

36. Yet I find myself, due to lack of patience, incapacitated
What heart is patient with misfortunes?
