1. He irrigated the slopes from Deir al-Qusair to the river,
To Al Jizah Al Gharra, then Al Shat then the bridge,

2. With delicate, pure rainclouds shedding gentle drops,
When they pour on the meadows, they make them lush,

3. Cloaking them in light and flowers.
So there are carpets of musk and embroidered tents

4. Surrounding cisterns of green,
As if the dew were tears spilled on the meadow's cheek

5. When the wind stirs among them, perfumed
With scent that shatters musk or ambergris.

6. My friend, there is no life but play and youth
And no play but in hearing songs and wine,

7. So pour the wine of solace for I see
Time is harsh and does not last long on one thing.

8. When Time gives you power, do not trust it
For its nature is betrayal and deceit,

9. So give to youth its share of life
And do not wait for white to streak your hair.

10. I am angry at self-indulgence and confusion in love,
Drunken eyes without real drunkenness.

11. Their glances have the glow of dawn
And their dangling earrings the radiance of sunrise.

12. You see the full moon in the platter of their cheeks
And their mouths smile like perfect gems.

13. They swore by the whiteness of Indian swords
That the twirling of their braids conquers all.

14. And to rush into battle and death at every arena,
Afraid, while making others afraid.

15. Glorious is he who meets his fate with courage
And lives what lifetime that remains with honor.

16. You are the Chosen One, the Guide
Through whom kingship was fruitful and ample.

17. You are the lamp of truth against all doubts,
Savior of all, and relief after hardship.

18. You have continued to grant us good morals
And brilliant glory since you took command.

19. You follow the way and guidance of the Prophet
And adhere to his authentic traditions.

20. You defeat your enemies, humbling them,
And honor your loyalists with might and triumph.

21. You revived the kingdom after its unrest,
Securing those who had been in danger.

22. Without you we would not find the rich so generous
Nor would we see such fine and pleasant days.

23. You pardon and show kindness when you can,
And excuse when able with benevolence.

24. It is as if, under your enlightened visage,
The porticoes of the palace were lit by sun and moon.

25. Signs of your authority appeared over you
That you are the Chosen, the Guardian of commands;

26. That you are the fifth Righteous Caliph
To whom the lands of Iraq submit without force;

27. That you are the Mahdi of all the Imams
And the leader of this promised time and age.

28. When we disputed over the stars and their knowledge,
Whether they influence good or evil,

29. Some believed in them, others denied,
Some argued excessively without knowing,

30. Saying they foretell good or evil
And know what will come of benefit or harm,

31. You taught us the meaning of all this,
The secret and the open in it,

32. Transmitting from your pure grandfather Al-Mansur
Who had insight into them beyond all creatures.

33. You informed us that the astrologer is a fraud
With his talk, and the seer is of the party of disbelief,

34. And that the fate of all unbelievers
Is the Fire on the Day of Resurrection and Assembly.

35. You united us after divergence and doubt
And reconciled us after discord and conflict.

36. You clarified the true saying with proof
Illuminating the darkness of doubt for every thinker.

37. You taught that the stars are decorations,
With missiles against devils as they move,

38. Compelled and constrained in their mansions,
Sailing by God's decree and measure.

39. That all the unseen belongs to God alone,
Blessed is He, the Lord and the Unique.

40. And what the Imams knew of it
They narrated from the Chosen, their grandfather Al-Tahir.

41. And you have guided us likewise in many ways,
Giving Abu Al-Mansur glory and pride.

42. For you are God's rope between His servants,
His proof, o you who clarify the splendid proofs!

43. If the kings of earth bow to your glory,
They are excelled by the crescent’s excellence over stars.

44. If the dripping cloud competed with your rain,
It would despair of reaching your torrents.

45. If my soul appraised itself against you
I would ransom it for you or add my lifetime to yours.

46. But the Merciful distinguished you before my words
With length of glorious life in His satisfaction.

47. O singular in kingship, my wishes can never
Produce verses equal to your merit.

48. If the most glorious were relieved of thanking people
You would remain beyond gratitude in the world.

49. Yours is the highest glory which Hashim
Constructed between Mashair and the Sacred House.

50. You surpassed both first and last,
And freely surpassed them with your pouring flood.

51. You rivaled kings in glory and outdid them,
Without reaching a tenth of your stature.

52. In every breast is constant love for you,
Though less than my love in my own breast.

53. God's blessing on you, as long as dawn rises,
For you are righteous, never tiring of righteousness.
