1. Sorrows are not killed except by what
The pitcher contained, tears of the grinder.

2. Yellow in the goblet, primal
Created before the creation of time.

3. Most subtly sensed when decanted
From the subtlety of understanding and eloquence of expression.

4. It takes its revenge on our feet
Binding words and twisting the tongue.

5. Its water arranges pearls in it
As if it arranges the borders of tents.

6. As if the goblet with it is snow
Pouring saffron with it.

7. Or a pearl held in an oyster shell
Or an oyster shell melted in a ladle.

8. Pass it around and drink its nectar
There is food and a pleasant place.

9. And listen between its cups
To the songs from the throats of beautiful maidens.

10. Until intoxication shakes you
As it shakes the courageous and frightens the coward.

11. So armor your morals and revel
Between the neighing of your pride and determination.

12. And if I am absent from you then I am like one
Who sees you in closeness, the seeing of the eye.

13. God is with you there and your angels
And may he who hates you live in humiliation.
