1. My wound by your eyes does not heal
And my devotion to you does not part

2. So do not fear my reproach, O tormentor
The worst of love is what abolition removes

3. I have not become sick except in resemblance to a sickness
That whispers in the eyelid of your kohl

4. So do not think my sickness is like the sickness
Of your eyes, which has health and illness

5. Which of the two sick is tortured, subdued
My body or your languid, inclining glance?

6. As long as the whiteness of cheeks is shining
And mouths have not abstained from kisses

7. If not for the languor of eyes, strength would not be
Nor would it become, without their glances, humble

8. And the Narcissus, if it did not have languor in it
No deed in a lover for it would be fulfilled

9. O magic! Those who claimed that
The named is but its name are ignorant

10. They spoke, and if they saw you as your name, there would not
Become between them, regarding that, dispute

11. I love you from near and afar equally
And sincere love does not change

12. If companionship becomes a price of love
Passion for you will make tedium flee

13. Stinginess pleases me if you are stingy
And generosity does not please me from you, nor grace

14. The worst of what is in men is their stinginess
And the best of what is in young women is stinginess

She spoke, and weeping made her blood flow

16. I said: what is wrong with him? She said: a confused lover
She said: And who charmed him and sang his praises?

17. I said: she who is coy with his passion
She said: Is it from a glance that there comes love?

18. This is an improvising lover; his love is extemporary
So I said: your eyes almost caused it with what

19. Ruses cannot achieve some of its unraveling
What flogging does to wrists is not what

20. Your glances do to the observer, inclining
And it has no power by which it rages

21. Against people other than that it is languor
Eyes of the witty are both joining

22. And cutting the rope of everyone who unites
Do not disavow the shedding of blood, nor

23. Deny that which they do from that
Blood of lovers is in their tricks

24. And in the beginnings of their cheeks, new
Eyes kill their lovers, and they do not

25. Resent them, that by them they were killed
O your magic! I seek your satisfaction, and how much

26. Burning I overlook and endure
And how much I bite the fingers from anger

27. As if it is a flame between my ribs
O your magic turns away the curtains from me

28. As well as the waiting and respite
O magic! That I forget you is prohibited

29. To my heart when loss draws near
You are the aim of the soul in her solitude

30. And her question, and the purpose, and the hope
You are like the sun on her happiest day

31. When she appears and in her mansion, Hamal
Adornment did not increase your beauty

32. Nor did undress change it before your adornment
Rod of Bān, extended hand, and palm bunch of Naqā‘

33. And full moon of completion, and foot, firm
The water of your cheeks in your cups or

34. Is your mouth musk mingled with honey?
Or is your pearl utterance when we scatter it?

35. Or your stature, the branch, when it inclines?
If not for my occupation with preserving my knowledge

36. No distraction from you in love would I have
I have outstanding ancestors, there are no

37. Ancestors like them, excellent nobles
They excelled and led the people and did not sin

38. And perfected their forbearance and did not hurry
I laud what they erected and raised up

39. And I do good just as they did
I am the son of whom the Messiah gave good tidings

40. And the attributes of his traits the apostles extolled
Muhammad is the best who appeared and guided

41. And the best of those who dress finely and scent himself
My father, the trustee, through whom the ways

42. Of guidance and paths for people became clear
And my mother, the chaste virgin, and who -

43. All the women of the world are servants to her
The tribe of the Prophet of guidance and his family

44. And his caliph successors, the subjugated
O you who are ready to take pride in us

45. And reached through us what they sought
You claimed you were angry at us

46. And with claims abundant errors ensue
When were you angry at us while our souls

47. For the sake of your nobility have been gifts?
You expelled Ja‘far and his followers

48. Without crime they perpetrated or committed
And the Hasanids, how much they wrapped

49. Themselves in the blades of your swords, and they did not kill
Then you killed Mūsá al-Riḍā deceitfully

50. For your mother after having killed the confused
Treachery and hatred you folded around us

51. Thus enemies confederate the slaves
Woe unto the sons of Aḥmad! They lost

52. And with them, below Hāshim, they were debased
The blood of the sons of Aḥmad they drank

53. And the flesh of the daughters of his daughter they ate
Their wombs they cut up, and their cheeks

54. They split open, and the belts of their people they carried
O descendants of al-‘Abbās! You are to the

55. Daughters of Zahrā‘ vengeance, and the term has drawn near
My hand would not have assisted me, nor would

56. The ways to supremacy for me have expanded
If I do not aid you with resolute, sturdy

57. Horses whose sky is white and spears worn thin
Closing off the east of the world and its west

58. With it the misguided tyrants fled in disgrace
In the belly of the earth one of them sunken

59. And in the heart of the plain terrified and wavering

60. It makes you in the midst of your abode in the morning
With it a piercing sword of Hāshim, hero

61. In his chests fear does not settle
Nor does disengagement make his determination decline

62. I am a leader for you with one
That takes vengeance for the camel’s disgrace

63. For the ‘Alawīs over you is honor
Without which you would not have attained, nor climbed

64. Through them you took pride over your adversary
Until the heel rose up and the example matched

65. Before them there was in you shortcoming
And in you from supremacy heaviness

66. The best of your ancestors was like their ancestor
And war with the polytheists burned

67. When Quraysh as a whole
Denied the Prophet and fought

68. His people and his family denied him
And among us for his affair was eagerness

69. Badr, Uḥud, Khaybar, and Rubbā‘
Makkah knows who for it the first rank

70. And who obeyed the Prophet, striving,
Waging jihad, whom laziness did not entrap

71. For God, the family of the Trustee from a people
Who did not turn away from piety nor commit injustice

72. They are the brave of mankind if they fear
And they are guides of worshippers if they are ignorant

73. If they prefer, they are most generous, and if they judge,
They tighten, and if they arbitrate them, they act justly

74. Honor departs if they depart
And good descends if they descend

75. O descendants of al-‘Abbās, your claim
Of inheritance from us is easy, mountain and flat land

76. If we advance over you, then for us
Are the precedents of honor, continuous

77. God advanced us, then deferred you
From us, so you have no means to us

78. Truth built for us an edifice of nobility
While your supremacy stratagems built

79. We are the sons of Aḥmad through whom
He supplicates his Lord and makes entreaty

80. We guaranteed the Prophet since he appeared
Until through his affair endurance grew long

81. For we are his sons and his progeny
And we are supporters of his religion, those killed

82. As if we are in the darkness of affairs, morning
While you in its correctness are lost
