1. If Fortune gives you power to rule as king,
With all you wish of bounty circling you,

2. Let not your heart be blinded by elation-
Take all you can, but temper greed with wisdom true.

3. Man dies an infant, dodderer, or young lion,
Yet his good deeds live on beyond his little span.

4. So share with all men freely of your bounty,
For soon life's thunder will be mute and wisdom wan.

5. Though fortune raises you high above the rest,
Yet arrogance will bring you naught but loss.

6. Bow down in deepest humility to Allah-
You and all men are equal before God, your Master.
