١. مالي أرى الماء علا وارتقَى
كأنّ فيه حَبَب البَرْدِ
2. My lover's slender form vies
With the tallest, finest reed;
٢. وزاحم المعشوق في قدّه
تزاحم الأْعظُم للجلد
3. You'd think it was the Nile in flood
With seventeen cubits at its peak,
٣. تراه ماء النيل وافتْ به
سَبْع وعشر كُمَّل العدّ
4. Or tears my lover shed in dread
Of estrangement and disdain.
٤. أم نثر المعشوق من دمعه
خوفاً من الهجران والصدّ
