أمر عيش وحال خفض

1. The sweet life has declined and state lowered,
Worries resolved and sorrow manifest.

١. أَمَرَّ عَيْشٌ وَحَالَ خَفْضُ
وَحَلَّ هَمُّ وَبَانَ غَمْضُ

2. An event shocked me and covered me in grief,
And misfortunes come rushing in waves.

٢. وَمَضَّنِي حَادِثٌ دَهَانِي
وَطَارِقُ الحَادِثَاتِ مَضُّ

3. Time has betrayed those I trusted,
Some are scattered, some passed away.

٣. وَخَانَنِي الدَّهْرُ فِي ثِقَاتِي
فَشَتَّ بَعْضٌ وَمَاتَ بَعْضُ

4. It bit me with its fangs,
While time harms those who bite.

٤. وَعَضَّنِي فِيْهِمُ بِنَابٍ
وَالدًّهْرُ مُودٍ بِمَنْ يَعَضُّ

5. Death hurried among them,
And the steeds of demise raced.

٥. وَأَسْرَعَتْ فِيْهِمُ المَنَايَا
وَسَيْرُ خَيْلِ المَنُونِ رَكْضُ

6. The nights took back their loans
And life itself is but a loan.

٦. وَاسْتَرْجَعَتْ مِنْهُمُ اللَّيَالِي
قُرُوضَهَا والحَيَاةُ قَرْضُ

7. It broke pacts with them
None feared their dissolution.

٧. وَنَقَضَتْ فِيْهِمُ شُرُوْطَاً
لَمْ يَكُ مِنْهَا يُخَافُ نَقْضُ

8. Circles of glory they possessed
Beyond the heavens' mansions is the earth.

٨. بُدُورُ عِزٍّ تَضَمَّنَتْهَا
بَعْدَ بُرُوجِ السَّمَاءِ أَرْضُ

9. How many branches in the soil from them
Have the hands of death picked while still green.

٩. كَمْ غُصُنٍ فِي التُّرَابِ مِنْهمْ
جَنَتْهُ أَيْدِي المَنُونِ غَضُّ

10. As if each man had upon him
Their provisions as arrows that determine.

١٠. كَأَنَّ كُلَّ امْرِئٍ عَلَيْهِ
رُزْؤُهُمْ أَسْهُمٌ تُقْضُّ

11. They lived the life of the glorious,
And saw through them lowness in the cycles.

١١. عَاشُوا كِرَامَ الفَعَالِ عَيْشَ ال
وَرَى بِهِمْ فِي المُحُولِ خَفْضُ

12. Misfortunes are warded from them by them,
To which ears are deaf.

١٢. تُدْحَضُ عَنْهُمْ بِهِمْ خُطُوبٌ
لِيْسَ لِأَذْنَانِهِنَّ رَحْضُ

13. They left behind glory and honor
Pure, and the glory of the noble is pure.

١٣. وَخَلَّفُوا مَحْتِدَاً وَعِزّاً
مَحْضَاً وَمَجْدُ الكِرَامِ مَحْضُ

14. No abode ever contained their wealth,
Nor was their honor brought low.

١٤. لَمْ يَصُنْ المَحْلُ قَطُّ مَالاً
لَهُمْ وَلَمْ يُسْتَذَلَّ عِرْضُ

15. They perished so realms perished by them
And open-handedness and closed-fistedness died with them.

١٥. أَوْدَوْا فَأَوْدَتْ بِهِمْ مَعَالٍ
وَمَاتِ بَسْطٌ بِهِمْ وَقَبْضُ

16. Patience, but when we lose
The likes of them, is a duty and obligation.

١٦. والصَّبْرُ إَلاَّ إِذَا فَقَدْنَا
مِثْلَهُمْ سُنَّةٌ وَفَرْضُ
