1. Her sigh melted his heart,
And her tears reddened his cheek.

2. How can one whose patience sold out hope for patience?
He has a Hejazi passion,

3. And a heart from the people of Adhra.
A soul that sorrow of love pushed,

4. To its bitter end.
With she-camels that fled away from him,

5. Until their fleeing ceased.
And a gazelle who visited me one day,

6. As white as an ostrich egg.
Every day to his estrangement,

7. He has an estrangement.
If she shows loyalty in love,

8. She shows betrayal.
O brother, the turns of time

9. In its turns are lessons learned.
Worries whitened my hair,

10. And not from old age.
Even though I’m the prophet of poetry

11. I came in an era of loss.
If my enviers were fair

12. They’d see me above them a drop.
They envied my poetry

13. But they couldn’t cut a hair off it.
How much flowing water

14. Of sorrows, nay embers!
And the grateful must have

15. Times of lull inevitably.
And how many empty valleys

16. We made their desolation regrettable!
I praise the eminent, of mention, resolve, and capability.

17. Bright of face, deeds,
Temperament, and thoughts.

18. Of honorable lineage, free of dishonor.
Wise of opinion, free of his lapse.

19. A piercing comet of light.
A cutting sword of sharp blade.

20. Upon him instead of the sword of defamation,
Are the beads of his good deeds.

21. He disgraced money for greed
In poverty and in wealth.

22. Sincere, no hypocrite to envy him
And cause him regret.

23. May God vex whoever dislikes
What I say out of their own dislike.

24. O most moist-eyed young man, palm-shaded!
O greatest in captivity taken prisoner!

25. O you who hands over generosity without resistance to command!
You adhered to the truth.

26. And broke fast in the nights of Ramadan.
Earning with God’s help the reward of Hajj and Umrah.

27. So Eid brought joy
To your heart that pleased it.

28. Now.. O rain of dew
Whose rain is ink!

29. I have a token like a full moon
I have framed like a full moon.

30. And I rushed the dowry
So the bride price would not scare off.

31. And we said on the morning of Eid
“Come to us tomorrow morning.”

32. The tradition must be fulfilled,
To its greatest lessons learned.

33. And nothing dispels anxiety
Like wine.

34. In your house goodness remains,
Sheltered from harms.

35. A beauty whose light is light
Reddish and yellowish.

36. When the crescent circles her
Lord of the cheeks and braids.

37. You’d think the moon circled
The stars in blossoms.

38. No, by God, O Ahmed
You won’t buy me with nonsense!

39. Can one quench a thirsty man
With a month’s worth of drink?

40. I pardoned you because I’m
Safe from your bothers.

41. Live well, and her sister “hasanah” (goodness)
Has come to you with excuses.

42. If passion shook her
It frightened her violently.

43. Like a torrent cascading
Down from towering rocks.
