1. I thanked You for Your bounty, but when
You spurned me to discipline me, I thanked You in estrangement,
١. شَكَرتُكَ لِلنُعمى فَلَمّا رَمَيتَني
بِصَدُّكَ تَأديباً شكَرتُكَ في الهَجرِ
2. So for me there is thanks for discipline
And for intimacy. And if You wish, pardon is nearer to thanks
٢. فَعِندِيَ لِلتَأديبِ شُكرٌ وَلِلنَدى
وَإِن شِئتَ كانَ العَفوُ أَدنى إِلى الشُكرِ
3. When the apologetic meets You with his excuse,
Your pardon is better than blame upon excuse.
٣. إِذا ما اِلتَقاكَ المُستَليمُ بِعُذرِهِ
فَعَفوُكَ خَيرٌ مِن مَلامٍ عَلى عُذرِ
