1. Indulge in wine with a boon companion,
In it is respite from the worries of sorrows.

2. Rise early with the dawn, for in it
Is a cure for sickness, for the ailing man.

3. Drink it when lightning flashes,
With water from the clouds' droplets.

4. That you may make this a wedding for that,
For rain is husband to vineyards.

5. Do not serve wine to a wicked man,
I do not sanction this for the wicked.

6. For generosity is from the noble soul,
And the water of nobility is for the noble man.

7. Do not take as your drinking mate
One feebleminded or soiled clothes.

8. And take as companion if you drink, an intimate friend,
For drinking becomes fine with intimates.

9. A man keeps company with each generation,
And in wine is linked to the companion.
